TRANSCEND – A multimedia production
Under St. Marks Theatre
New York, NY - TRANSCEND is a new multimedia production that examines the effects of gentrification for a working artist in modern day Brooklyn, NY. Written and performed by Kilusan Bautista, TRANSCEND fuses theatrical storytelling, visual projections, hip hop movements and electronic
music, as well spoken word poetry to take audiences on a 3-week train ride that explores homelessness, poverty and hope. Premiered at the 20th annual New York International Fringe Festival, TRANSCEND is back for 5-Monday nights: January 9th – February 6th, 2017 at Under St. The TRANSCEND production team consists of International Hip Hop Theatre Artist Kilusan Bautista; Transmedia Direction by Wi-Moto Nyoka; Composition by TBA; Visual Artist - Siriphong Tipayakesorn; Dramaturg - Sadah Espii Proctor; and special guest performers to open the night. The goal of TRANSCEND is to humanize and broaden the discussion around gentrification in order to positively influence public policy based on fair and non-discriminatory housing/renting practices. Set inside of a New York City Subway, TRANSCEND reveals an honest story about what artists and other working class residents of modern day NYC experience when trying to find a descent place to live within an aggressive housing market. The macro housing policies are driving rents up and economically forcing hard working residents out of their homes/apartments. This culture of displacement is growing rampant, forcing New Yorkers into uncomfortable situations such as homelessness, couch surfing or overcrowding apartments, even unsafe homeless shelters. Kilusan Bautista shares a true story about his recent battles being displaced out of his Brooklyn apartment, resulting in 3-weeks of couch surfing and doing whatever it takes to survive. TRANSCEND asks the audience to question the idea of hope during times of hardship and struggle. The new home studio/office in Brooklyn is still a work in process. This week I managed to put up some curtains and I especially am excited to test out the large green screen for live streaming purposes. Next up is rigging some lighting and projectors for the visually inspired dream catchers!

+ dear community, we have had to keep Phoenix home from school this week because the move absolutely zapped our energy!
Nevertheless, we still managed a few moments in the humid and hot summer sun. Phoenix is definitely getting some tanning in action - when Asia/Africa/LasAmericas flow free with the spirit of Apolaki - divinity happens!
+ Dear community, The immediate change that comes with moving is extremely difficult for kids. I give thanks for the few moments of joy that Phoenix has experienced as we are in the middle of our big move back to . It’s all for you and your sister, especially being 15minutes away from your school by car!
+ I got a long way to go to learn but I am in it for the long haul. As a family we are in the middle of a big change to support Phoenix. Definitely feels right and we will share this news very shortly with our developing interdependent community.

We will be sharing newly developed excerpts of ‘Two Stories about the Same Miracle’ and participate in a community dialogue with other parent artists from the Brooklyn Arts Exchange.

+ on May 6th/7th, 2022 I returned to the stage with my 3rd solo theater production . My wife and I were raising two beautiful daughters for the past 5years. Not only was it exciting to return to the performance world, it was an honor to present a story about new parents navigating the world of unconditionally caring for a disabled child. Everything happens for a reason so don’t stop believing in yourself. You never know what the future holds.
We will be back onstage in August with more from our Parent artist residency. Believe that!

In the coming days I will be entering my final MFA semester at Brooklyn College and I am getting hyped all over again! Over the next few months I am blessed to get busy with my thesis production - PhoeniX rising in ScorpiO.
Excuse me as I reinvent myself, while forever staying true to my roots as a storyteller of the heart & soul!
* The morning of my Life *
With The Creator, The ancestors, my wife and two daughters, with my family and community, I managed to receive all A's during the Fall of 2021 semester. I share this as a Father who has been inspired to create art once again because of my family and community. I have 3 more classes to go during the Winter/Spring of 2022 semester and I will achieve a life goal, a Masters in Fine Arts degree at Brooklyn College (CUNY).
I am especially excited to produce my thesis projects which entail a multimedia performance ( : PhoeniX rising in ScorpiO) & a Fathers with special needs children support group. Please stay tuned for April & May of 2022 are the targeted months to launch my thesis projects. Hybridity, flexibility and creativity are the pillars that shall maintain the integrity and authenticity of these electric projects.
I've been keeping my head down in the books and humbled in the artistic development process, this strategy was essential during this current pandemic! I am empowered to raise my head in confidence and stand on my two feet to deliver these visions/messages/movements.
Only in our own darkness can we see pure light.
My wife & I are still processing the magnetic energy and community support shown at our stages reading on Nov 21st, 2021.
I want to take a moment to shout out for all the inspiration and love! Y’all have embraced me as an artist and I look forward to what shall become of our final semester at Brooklyn College (Spring 2022) especially the collaborations that has been brewing!

* Thank you to the light that was brought together last Sunday, Nov 21st as my wife & I presented two staged readings of our new scripts dedicated to our daughter Phoenix.
* Thank you to everyone who joined us either in-person, virtually via zoom and in spirit. We felt the love and we hope to continue spreading an abundance of light as we restore ourselves for the work ahead in developing two full productions in early May of 2022.

#pxso1111 - like the world, I got a lot going on. My spirit has been heavy these past 3-weeks since Phoenix has been sick. It’s been a challenge staying focused on the development of #pxso1111 but we must persist and move and dance and forever create the possibilities especially during times of struggle and uncertainty.
