Birth: John Winston Lennon was born on October 9, 1940, in Liverpool, England, during World War II air raids. His father was largely absent, and he was raised mainly by his aunt Mimi.

He formed the Quarrymen in 1957, which became The Beatles after he teamed up with Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. The band changed popular music with songs like "In My Life," "Help!," and "A Day in the Life." After the breakup in 1970, Lennon went solo with albums like Plastic Ono Band and Imagine, whose title song became an anthem of peace. With Yoko Ono he staged "bed-ins" and recorded "Give Peace a Chance," becoming a prominent anti-war voice. After a few years away from music to raise his son Sean, he returned in 1980 with Double Fantasy.

On December 8, 1980, Lennon was shot outside the Dakota building in New York City, where he lived. Mark David Chapman, a fan who had asked for his autograph earlier that day, fired multiple shots as Lennon returned home with Ono. He was rushed to Roosevelt Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival, at age 40. Chapman pleaded guilty and received a sentence of 20 years to life. He has been repeatedly denied parole.
