Unlicensed, uninsured shipping companies aren’t just a liability for the client — they’re a liability for whoever referred them. Damage, loss, theft, or an accident on the road can trace straight back to your recommendation.

Cheap doesn’t always mean cheap for you. Referring low-cost, low-quality, non-specialized, or non-compliant carriers for high-value or specialized cargo might save your client a few dollars upfront — but it can cost you your credibility when something goes wrong.

Clients trust your referrals more than they trust a Google search. That trust only holds up if you’re actually vetting who you recommend — every time, not just when it’s convenient.

Referring based solely on who you know and your history with them instead of who’s actually qualified doesn’t protect anyone. It just means your clients get whoever you’re comfortable with — licensed or not.

Arranging or paying for shipping on a client’s behalf — even a company they picked — can edge into illegal freight brokering or forwarding territory. Know where your role ends and the carrier’s begins.

Before you refer a shipping or freight service:

👉 Check their FMCSA registration
👉 Look them up on BrokerSnapshot.com
👉 Confirm active liability insurance.
🚩 If they hesitate, that’s your answer.
