This week‘s construction update has some good news and some not so good news. First, the slab is gone! It took about two weeks a little less I’m not sure you and family center. Staff are happy not to listen to that anymore. What was expected to be pretty expensive soil remediation wasn’t! There was only one leak that did not deep into the soil, so the cleanup was significantly less than anticipated. Third, pretty much all of the glycol was recovered without further leakage. That is a definite win! And now for the bad news. The project has remained on schedule, but there will now be a lag because of the departure of the project manager from Cimco. As soon as I said, how’s another qualified work of laying the new slab can start. It is unfortunate that this is a specialization with only a few qualified candidates in the country. No one is happy about this. There was nothing the town of toasted or anyone else on the project for that matter. They’re doing everything they can to get this back on track. If anything changes, we will be notified immediately.

I will do my best to do a weekly update on the destruction of the old slab here we are today. They have made it a little bit of progress. I can imagine this is a slow process. That is a thick slab concrete!

This week‘s update on the construction at the rink is that we continue to be on schedule. Earlier in the week, the glycol was flushed out of the system. They moved in a back hole and a massive hydraulic jackhammer. As soon as the ink was dry on the permit, which might’ve been yesterday, they will start breaking up that slab! Once that is removed, then the soil is tested and the soil remediation will be scheduled. So far so good.

My apologies for being a little delayed on the monthly report. But basically we are still on schedule and though the mayor would love to see ice October 1 we don’t think that’s going to happen. No one is willing to push this project just to get it done because that’s where we get in trouble. It will continue at a steady pace and we will look for ice early November as usual.

We had our monthly progress update this evening and everything is moving forward. The Dasher boards are gone! The new roof was tested by the weather and passed with flying colors. Some of the beams need a final painting. But the roof is essentially complete. Save the date -March 6th- for a ceremonial event!

I think the Takeaway after watching the replay on the men’s free skate, I wasn’t able to watch it live earlier, is that Ilia Malinin is a human being. The pressure of having to skate both the short and the long in the team event, along with all of the pressure of the expectation that he would walk away with the gold. I don’t think any of us can understand what that kind of pressure feels like. All sports are as much mental as they are physical. This should in no way tarnish the absolutely superhuman level at which he skates. He had a bad day as did many of the men.

I really hope he can put this behind him and continue to raise the bar. He’s already set it so high it’s incredible, but I don’t think he’s done raisng it yet.
