"On this day in weather history: October 13, 2006, an unusually early and intense lake-effect snowstorm - nicknamed ""Lake Storm Aphid"" - buried the Buffalo, New York area, dropping 15 inches of snow downtown and up to 24 inches in nearby suburbs. Because trees still had their leaves, the wet, heavy snow snapped countless branches, knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of people for days. A reminder that an early-season storm can be just as disruptive as a mid-winter one.
