This Labor Day, we honor the hands, hearts, and determination that have helped build our communities and shape our history.

From artists and educators to entrepreneurs, tradespeople, organizers, and community leaders, generations of Black workers have left an undeniable mark on Tampa Bay and beyond.

As the Tampa Bay African American Arts & Cultural Center takes shape in historic West Tampa, we’re proud to create a place where those contributions can be celebrated, shared, and remembered for generations to come.

We want to hear about the places, events, and traditions that you remember from growing up in Tampa. Maybe it was a neighborhood gathering that brought everyone together, a local business where you always felt welcome, a church or community space that played an important role in your life, or a tradition your family looked forward to year after year.

If your memory takes us back to West Tampa, the future home of the Tampa Bay African American Arts & Cultural Center, we would especially love to hear it.

The Tampa Bay African American Arts & Cultural Center is being created as a place where Black history can be preserved, artists can be celebrated, stories can be shared, and people of all generations can come together to experience the richness of African American arts and culture.

Bringing a place like this to life takes a community that believes in what it can mean for Tampa Bay, not only when the doors open, but for generations to come.

From gospel and jazz to R&B, hip-hop, and beyond, Black artists have helped shape the sound of American culture for generations.

On August 28, 1963, hundreds of thousands gathered for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, united by a shared call for equality, opportunity, and change.

More than six decades later, Dr. King’s words continue to remind us of the power of community and what can happen when people come together with purpose.

That spirit is reflected in the mission of the Tampa Bay African American Arts & Cultural Center: to create a place where Black history is preserved, culture is celebrated, artistic expression is elevated, and generations can come together to learn, connect, and be inspired.

Today, we honor the legacy of those who marched and the work that continues to move our communities forward.

Today, we pause to remember the lives, stories, strength, and resilience of those impacted by the transatlantic slave trade.

August 23 marks the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, a day to honor those who endured, those who resisted, and those whose courage helped shape generations to come.

Remembering our history, preserving it, and ensuring these stories continue to be told matters.

At the Tampa Bay African American Arts & Cultural Center, we believe in creating a place where African American history, art, culture, and stories are honored, preserved, and shared for generations to come.

Some pieces are valuable not simply because of what they are, but because of the history and stories they carry.

This Scott King–signed collage featuring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King was among the auction items at the 2026 TBAAACC Gala—a meaningful reminder of the legacy, courage, and determination that continue to inspire generations.

It also represents something at the heart of the Tampa Bay African American Arts & Cultural Center: the importance of preserving our history, honoring those who helped shape it, and creating opportunities for future generations to experience and learn from it.

When we preserve our stories, we ensure they continue to be told. 💛

Imagine walking through the doors and discovering a space filled with art, culture, history, creativity, and stories that reflect the richness of the African American experience. ✨

The Tampa Bay African American Arts & Cultural Center is being built to be a place where our community can gather, learn, celebrate, create, and connect...indoors and out.

And soon, this will be more than something to imagine. It will be part of historic West Tampa.
