FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Tacoma Ocean Fest Comes to a Close After Seven Years
The popular waterfront festival of art, science, and conservation, founded with the mission to celebrate and protect the ocean, closes its chapter.

Tacoma, Wash.: After nearly a decade of uplifting diverse voices and bringing the community of Tacoma together through arts, education, and aquatic fun to celebrate and honor the ocean, our beloved Tacoma Ocean Fest is being put to rest.
We cannot thank our community enough for the unwavering outpour of support over the years, from attendees and participants to generous sponsors and community partners alike, including but not limited to the Puyallup Tribe of Indians, City of Tacoma Environmental Services, Cascade Federal Credit Union, Puget Sound Energy, Tacoma Venues & Events, Port of Tacoma, the Bamford Foundation, Tacoma Arts Commission, Tacoma Events & Venues, Tacoma Public Utilities, The Grand Cinema, Tacoma Public Schools, Tacoma Public Library, South Sound Surfrider, Harbor WildWatch and Metro Parks Tacoma, and Tacoma Creates…to name only a handful!

Founded by Rosemary Ponnekanti in 2018, Tacoma Ocean Fest encouraged South Sound to learn more about the ocean, its threats, and how to protect it, and we firmly believe that this sentiment will remain with our communities for generations to come. We would be remiss if we did not acknowledge Shunpike for their support - the non-profit agency that provides independent arts groups in Washington State with the services, resources, and opportunities they need to forge their own paths to sustainable success.

While our chapter with Tacoma Ocean Fest comes to a close, rest assured that the Foss Waterway Seaport has plenty of family-friendly maritime fun and education in store this coming year and beyond!

That's a wrap on the 2024 Tacoma Ocean Fest 🌊

Endless thanks to everyone who attended and made this year’s festival our biggest ever!

This free, family-friendly festival celebrating the preservation of the Ocean would not be possible without all of the community partners that volunteered their time and talents, including the Puyallup Tribe of Indians that welcomed and blessed the festival, and the Tacoma City Ballet that wrapped up the festival with the gorgeous performance of "Whalesong".

Plus, the 34 eco-booths that offered education, games, and prizes...all 6 vessels that gave dock side tours and Waterway excursions...and the 3 OceanX speakers sharing their expertise. Not to mention the 2 bands, 3 dance groups, 1 live DJ, and entertainment from Vuelta La Luna.

Immersive exhibit "If I Lived in the Ocean", by Paula Nishikawara will be on display at the Seaport through the summer. Plus, come see the two incredible permanent new murals "Mother of Waters" by River Reishi and "Orca" by .

The 2024 Foss Waterway Seaport Tacoma Ocean Fest was supported by Tacoma Creates, KBTC Public Television, KNKX Public Radio, Museum of Glass, City of Tacoma.

Plus, sponsored by Port of Tacoma, Tacoma Venues & Events, Puget Sound Energy, KeyBank, Cascade Federal Credit Union, and TAPCO CU

Lantern Paddle for Species

Friday, June 28th 7p-10p
Thea Foss Waterway

Get out those LEDs – and if you have one, a kayak or paddleboard. On Friday, June 28, Tacomans will light up the Thea Foss Waterway with the annual Lantern Paddle for Species, a part of Tacoma Ocean Fest 2024.

With FREE shoreside/inside entertainment from 7-10p, lantern-making workshop, FREE light art and paddle launch at 9p, the event isn’t just a cool excuse to rig up lights on your paddlecraft or wave them on land.

You’ll also be helping create a magical twilight moment, celebrating all threatened species – like our own orcas and salmon – and reminding our world what we need to do to protect them from pollution, climate change and extinction.

WHERE: Foss Waterway Seaport, 705 Dock St, Tacoma
PARKING: paid at Republic lot north of Seaport, free on street
LAUNCH: Launch your SUP or kayak from the Seaport’s ramp and dock, or float down from Thea’s Park just north.

7-10p: Museum open for free with hands-on marine science and a sneak peek at this year’s Ocean Fest art. Food vendors outside and cocktails available to purchase inside. Plus, DJ Special K 🎶

7-8p: PLU Steel Pan Ensemble. Make your own glowing ocean-themed DIY lantern inside the museum education area, led by artist Cheryl Rux.

7-9p: Vuelta La Luna circus entertainment

9-10p: Paddle launch from FWS dock or Thea’s Park, and circle in front of Seaport. Wear/bring lights and/or watch on land.

SAFETY

Please stay safe. Wear a lifejacket and know your water limits. Human paddlecraft only, please. Beginners: Stay inside the protected water area beside the dock.

NOTE: Paddling is done entirely at your own risk! We take no responsibility for your safety on the water. If in doubt, stay on land.
