The second thing I want to share is the growth of Q***r Northwest. Q***r Journalism is one of the programs that we launched in 2023, thanks to funding from Tacoma Creates. We just finished our first cycle, with 4 people finishing the class out of the initial 8 who signed up. The course is meant to build the basics for anyone to learn how to document and share the news and world around them. As the LGBTQ+ community, we have seen our rights and literature be banned, removed, and are starting to be erased from history all over again. This class is meant to help secure the stories for all of us to share and secure them for future generations. With the original intent to be focused on Tacoma, we wanted to make this course available online, and in the first cycle, we had a student join all the way from Africa, using their phone to join via Zoom. They were dedicated and, alongside those locally, were one of the ones who finished the entire course. It is incredible to see how a small program meant to teach local LGBTQ+ people in the Tacoma area has an impact worldwide.
I am proud to say our next cycle is ready to start this Sunday. As of now, we have grown from 8 in the original class to over 18 and growing. Plus, people can now take a monthly module for a certain subject or sign up for the entire course. There are only 7 seats left for the in-person class, and anyone can join via Zoom to take the course as well.
