BEHIND THE MUSIC
How Rust on My Halo Came to Be

Rust on My Halo is one of Michael's most personal songs, born from a lifetime of self-reflection, healing, and redemption.

Growing up in a difficult home, Michael learned to survive by always being ready for a fight. As a young boy and throughout his teenage years, he often reacted with anger, jumping into conflicts before taking time to think. At the time, he believed that was simply who he was. It wasn't until he had left home and his family behind that he began to understand something important—those reactions weren't his true character. They were the result of the environment he had grown up in.

As he matured, Michael came to realize that no one is perfect, including himself. He couldn't change what had happened or erase the mistakes he had made, but he could choose the kind of man he wanted to become. Rather than letting his past define him, he made a commitment to break the cycle and become someone better than the circumstances that shaped his early life.

That journey wasn't easy. The wounds from childhood don't disappear overnight, and some are still healing today. Along the way, Michael recognized that he had hurt people because he was carrying so much hurt of his own. He reached out to many of those people, taking responsibility for his actions and making amends wherever he could.

The "rust" in Rust on My Halo symbolizes those imperfections and scars we all carry. Michael doesn't claim to have lived a flawless life or to have always been a good man. Instead, the song is an honest acknowledgment that while his halo may have a little rust on it from the mistakes of his past, it doesn't define who he is today.

At its heart, Rust on My Halo is a song about redemption, accountability, and hope. It's a reminder that our past may leave marks on us, but it doesn't have to determine our future. We are all capable of growth, forgiveness, and becoming the person we were meant to be.

BEHIND THE MUSIC
Through the Thunder"

Through the Thunder is a deeply personal song about overcoming the emotional baggage of the past and choosing to stay when life gets difficult.

The song is a metaphor for the storms Michael carried with him into his relationship with Kathleen. Those storms were rooted in painful experiences of abandonment during his youth, which shaped how he handled relationships as an adult. Whenever things became difficult or uncertain, his instinct was to leave first. By walking away, he felt he could control the ending rather than risk being abandoned again. If he left, he couldn't be the one who was left behind.

During the first year of his relationship with Kathleen, everything seemed effortless. But as time went on, the normal challenges that every relationship faces began to surface. Along with them came his fears, old wounds, and learned patterns of self-protection. Instead of running, however, they worked through those difficult moments together.

Through the Thunder tells the story of choosing love over fear. It is about realizing that every relationship will face storms, but the strongest ones are built by staying, communicating, and weathering those storms together. Sometimes the answer isn't to escape the rain—it's to wait it out, knowing that clearer skies are waiting on the other side.

For Michael, this song marks the moment he realized that some relationships are worth fighting for, and that healing often begins when you stop running and decide to stay.
