The new species, Leopardus tilcayo, is a type of tiger cat, a group of small felines in the genus Leopardus that are native to South America. In a paper published on Thursday in Current Biology, the researchers identify five distinct species of tiger cats in South America, including the tilcayo.

The discovery of a new mammal, especially a cat, is rare. It’s even more rare to find an entirely new species rather than a variation of a known species. The study analyzed the genomes of 38 cats, including 26 Leopardus cats, comprising “the most complete genetic study yet,” said the study’s co-lead author Jonas Lescroart, an evolutionary ecologist at the University of Antwerp in Belgium, to Gizmodo.

My big black cat is finished. 🖤❤️ From all those first washes of red, pink, purple and blue, she’s finally become a black cat. I’ve left little flashes of colour showing through her fur so the black still feels warm and alive, then finished her with copper whiskers to catch the light.

She’ll be heading off to an exhibition in October, but first she needs a title. Any ideas? 🐈‍⬛✨
