Podcast tips and advice for beginner podcasters from the Odd Dad Out
1- Podcasting is EASY: All it takes to make a basic podcast is a decent microphone, a way to record, a place to host your files, and an RSS feed for listeners to subscribe to. But...
2- Podcasting is HARD: Making a "good" podcast is a lot more work than just recording your voice.
Research, editing, show notes, making episode artwork, scheduling, marketing, community building, and about a million other micro tasks for every episode...
3- There's more to it than the tech: Your microphone, recorder, or the editing software you use isn't half as important as being passionate about your topic.
Basic guidelines for podcast success:
Consistency, Quality, and Time...
4- Consistency is CRUCIAL, But also it's kinda not: Releasing episodes on a regular day and time is great for building an audience.
But remember, you're only human.
Sometimes life happens, and that's ok.
5- Quality CONTENT is KING, but PERSONALITY is QUEEN: It's important to have well informed, high quality content with the best sound quality you can achieve,
but if you've got the personality of a potato sack, nobody's gonna keep listening.
6- Podcast growth is about the long game: Unless you've already got a following elsewhere, you're probably starting with ZERO podcast listeners, and that's okay.
Growing your audience requires a lot of patience and time and did I mention patience...
7- Remember to have FUN:
Podcasting is supposed to be a fun hobby. Even if you're podcasting professionally or for your business, your listeners can tell if your heart isn't in it, and they will start to tune out.
If you aren't enjoying it, neither will they.
And if you aren't enjoying yourself, why are you doing it?
