Imposter syndrome is easily the most common issue among podcasters. We all question why anyone would listen to us. We all hate the sound of our voices. We all wonder if we are good enough.

But here's the thing...

It isn't about what you think of yourself. You can question your own skills, your voice, your talent all you want, but it's the people listening to you that really matter. And they obviously think that you ARE worth it and you ARE that good. Otherwise they wouldn't keep listening, right?

So next time your imposter syndrome creeps in and you think you aren't worth it, remember that there are far more people out there listening to your podcast that would beg to differ.

Don't forget that you are the most important part of your podcast.

Podcasting is a very personal medium. You get to share your unfiltered self with your audience and being them with you on the journey that is your content.
And it doesn't matter what type of Podcast you make. You are the secret ingredient that makes your show unique.

*If you do a news show, you determine what and how you report that news. Even just reading it, how you delivery a story is unique to you.

*If you do a film podcast, people listen more to hear what YOU have to say about a movie and less about the movie itself.

*Believe it or not, even when you are guest/interview focused, the guest is NOT more important than you. Your guest is who they are, but it's your chemistry with them that makes their appearance on your show special. Now, that's not to say that you should focus on yourself there, but remember that your audience listens to YOUR Podcast, and that guest is an ever changing part of that.

*If you have a co-host, your chemistry is far more important than anything you could actually talk about. I can't tell you how many shows I listen to where I honestly don't care about the subject matter because I love the hosts chemistry.

*Audio drama is different and the same in that it's about that combination of people who create it. The writers and voice actors, sound design and editors all work together to create something special. And that could all be done by one person, but whether solo or with a team, it's still the people behind it that make it special and unique.

So don't forget that YOU are your Podcast, and it wouldn't be what it is without you.

Podcast tips and advice for beginner podcasters from the Odd Dad Out

1- Podcasting is EASY: All it takes to make a basic podcast is a decent microphone, a way to record, a place to host your files, and an RSS feed for listeners to subscribe to. But...

2- Podcasting is HARD: Making a "good" podcast is a lot more work than just recording your voice.
Research, editing, show notes, making episode artwork, scheduling, marketing, community building, and about a million other micro tasks for every episode...

3- There's more to it than the tech: Your microphone, recorder, or the editing software you use isn't half as important as being passionate about your topic.
Basic guidelines for podcast success:
Consistency, Quality, and Time...

4- Consistency is CRUCIAL, But also it's kinda not: Releasing episodes on a regular day and time is great for building an audience.
But remember, you're only human.
Sometimes life happens, and that's ok.

5- Quality CONTENT is KING, but PERSONALITY is QUEEN: It's important to have well informed, high quality content with the best sound quality you can achieve,
but if you've got the personality of a potato sack, nobody's gonna keep listening.

6- Podcast growth is about the long game: Unless you've already got a following elsewhere, you're probably starting with ZERO podcast listeners, and that's okay.
Growing your audience requires a lot of patience and time and did I mention patience...

7- Remember to have FUN:
Podcasting is supposed to be a fun hobby. Even if you're podcasting professionally or for your business, your listeners can tell if your heart isn't in it, and they will start to tune out.
If you aren't enjoying it, neither will they.
And if you aren't enjoying yourself, why are you doing it?

I've been for going on 5 years. In that time, not only have I fallen in love with podcasting, but I've also fallen in love with the podcast community. As such, I really take great joy from helping others make their podcasts. Whether it's sharing tips and tricks for and editing audio, or it's offering advice on what equipment and services to use, I just love to help people make their shows the best that they can.

As a myself, even after 5 years, I still fight with . I have a hard time calling myself a podcast consultant. Maybe it's because I know so many of them that have been around for 10+years that are way smarter and more knowledgeable than I am. At the same time, I've seen more than my fair share of consultants who don't really know the community or the industry and don't have a half a clue what they're talking about.

Honestly, you could call my approach more like a "podcast life coach." I want to be here to help guide you and motivate you to make the Podcast that YOU WANT TO MAKE. I'm not going to tell you "do this and you'll get 10,000 downloads a day." That's a sure sign of a scam. I want to work WITH you to help you achieve your vision for your podcast. If you need information and resources about microphones and other equipment, or you just need a sounding board for strategizing the shape and direction of your podcast, I want to be there for you.

Got a question? Ask away in the comments, DM me, or you can even text me or leave a voicemail at the number in the bio. Or fill out the form at ODOVoicePro.com to request a free strategy session to discuss your podcasting needs.

I love podcasting. And I want to help you make your podcast as awesome as you picture it in your head.

You don't have to be perfect to create something amazing.
Some of the greatest things ever created were full of imperfections.
All that truly matters is that if you have a drive to create something, you do it. Let it out into the world, warts and all. Everything is beautiful to someone, and we are ALL our own worst critics.
