If you came out to see Halloween lights last night, you haven’t been paying attention. We are taking the year off (including Christmas). Come back next year.

This was the last thing outside from last year’s display. I’m thinking that this Halloween and Christmas will be small.

All the lights are removed from the roof. About 14,000 shown here.

Just found a whole controller unplugged. (16 circuits out).

12/25/2017

Ugh. So much wrong. This is what happens when you plug in and hope for the best. Oh well, at least it is lit.

12/25/2017

I just realized that the GFCI outlet controlling the left tree and tune to sign was tripped. Looking a bit better now.

12/24/2017

Well, the fates were working against me again today. I threw out my back this morning. It loosened up a little this afternoon. I was able to plug in pretty much everything that is outside. I will start the music at 8:30. I haven't tested or reprogrammed for the lights that are available. So, there may be some dark parts. Weather permitting, Leon and I will be outside to hand out candy canes.

December 19, 2017

I was up finishing the roof tonight and it took longer than expected. Normally, I don't go on the roof at night. But I am so glad to have seen this and that I am able to share.

A rare night view from atop the Lights at Lowes Island.

12/18/2017

I was able to get more up yesterday--quite a bit. All the inflatables are up an staked down (including some that haven't been up since 2014), the stone manger set is out as are the wire frame reindeer and the mini-trees. I still have stuff to plug in, but there MAY be music tonight and there WILL be music by this weekend.

12/16/2017

I was able to get a bunch more up today. Still not enough to have the music on, but it is pretty. Roof was a no go. Still kind of frozen up there.

12/09/2017

Things calmed down a little with work today. That gave me a chance to connect some lights and put up some more. Far from done. Follow here for updates.

12/04/2017

I was up on the roof today. The left side is 60% done. I hope to have time to finish the roof tomorrow before the weather changes for the worse.

12/03/2017

It makes me sad to see the cars driving by slowly looking at the little bit of lights that I have up now. They turn around in the cul-de-sac and leave. My goal is to get the roof done today and the tune-to sign up. That will at least let people know to check here before coming back.

I'll do the math for my display in the comments. It is MUCH less than you may think.

Many of my lights/decorations have been around for years and years. If you look at the windows (nearly every window), you will see "candles" like these. This particular one is probably one of my oldest--purchased with paper route money at an after-Christmas sale-probably 35-40 years ago and first displayed in my parent's home in Cheektowaga, NY.

It was probably sold with plain orange C-7 light bulbs. While still a teen, I saw some of these flicking flame bulbs at AM&A's department store at the Thruway Mall on the second floor just to the right as you got off the escalator (remember it like it was yesterday). The bulbs ran a couple of bucks each which was a ton of money for a boy making $30 a week selling newspapers. But, they had a string of them that was maybe $7-. As I recall I couldn't wait until December 26 for them to go to 50% off.

Notice the plug. No fuses; not even polarized. How did we survive back then? If you look at the set of three windows over the garage, you will see this one flicking away in the middle window.

Last year, I started late with my lights. So, they didn't make it out.

11/18/2017

Last year at this time, I hadn't run one cord or hung one light. This year, the power and control networks are still basically done from Halloween. So, I am ahead of the game. I'm shooting for an opening night Dec 1- 7 (ish). I'll post more as things start coming together.

After 13 years here and a couple more previously, we bid adieu to not-so-scary Frank.

All the stitching, weatherproofing and viagra in the world and Frank just couldn't get it up this year.

10/29/2017

I got a bunch done yesterday. Weather isn't cooperating today.

Here is the status report. The roof is 90% done. The network is 90% done. The power is about 75% done. The lights/decorations are about 30% done. The wiring of the individual circuits is about 20% done.

While I appreciate the appreciation, someone hasn't checked their sources before going to print. We haven't had a big display since 2014 and this page has clearly reported that I ain't ready.

Guess who will be working his azz off this afternoon.

I hope to have the network up tomorrow (Tuesday). That should give me the ability to turn on some lights.

10/20/2017

Things are going slowly. Busy at work. I may have something lit today. Hopefully music will be running by Sunday night.

10/18/2017

A beautiful day to put Halloween lights on the roof.

10/07/2017

I'm shooting to have Halloween up and running by October 20. Once I am certain, I will post an event for turning on the lights.

Today's project was to add 7 circuits to this bundle that already had 28. This bundle of (essentially) extension cords weighs just over 25 lbs. I use this to light up our roof with over 11,000 lights at Christmas (and a couple thousand at Halloween). If you unraveled it all and stretched it out, it is just 6 feet short of 1/4 mile long. It has 35 male plugs and 70 female connectors all from www.ZipPlugs.com

09/28/2017

Sunday is 30 days until Halloween!

If you live in The Cascades HOA, you know that holiday decorations cannot be put up more than 30 days before a holiday.

The plan is to have our big Halloween display this year with the talking face!

In case you missed it, my neighbors on both sides are selling (for different reasons). One came on the market 90+ days ago. It is my opinion that they are about $40K over-priced. And as much as I'd like to see them gone, no one is going to pay that much. The other neighbors who I would like to keep have priced their home to sell. Take a look. If you are interested, please let me know and I can set up a showing.

So, after much consideration, speaking to my family and even getting advice from previous contestants, I've decided against auditioning (this year).

The main reasons were:

1) The hectic (and early) shooting schedule.
2) The potential negative impact of filming on my neighbors.
3) The impact of the time lost on my (new/growing) business
4) The potential negative impact of future increased traffic on my neighborhood directly attributable to the show.

Just received this message. You know that I would love to do it. It would be a great year with you-know-who (hopefully) gone. But my understanding is that they film too early and the HOA wouldn't allow Christmas decorations before November 25. :(

Lights at Lowes Island

Here is one of the homes that will be available soon.

http://mrislistings.mris.com/Matrix/Public/Portal.aspx?ID=74447630375

Something very unusual just happened this week. My very good neighbors put their house up for sale. That is sad news, but my neighbors who hate me and my lights and have made several attempts to shut down the lights and generally make my life miserable, are also selling their home. So, folks, here is your chance to live next to The Lights at Lowes Island. If you are looking for a home in the area and you love Christmas lights, let me know and I will help you schedule an appointment as soon as either home is ready to show. (Remember I am a licensed Realtor.)

Here is a blast from my past. I was cleaning out my tub of power connectors (triple taps, power strips, 3-2 adapters...) and I found these two. The left one, I used to screw into the light fixture under the eave of my parent's garage to plug lights in. Since I had more than one thing to plug in, I used the triple tap (on the right). My parent's home was build in the 50s, so, you will notice that neither of these is polarized (both negative and positive same size) as they would be today.

Even though all the decorations and lights were down outside before the HOA deadline, it was only today when I finally put away the power cords, network cords and final controller that were all outside.

Testing and storing our candy canes today. Question: would these candy canes bother anyone? Or would you put them away as is?

01/26/2017

Today is exactly on month after Christmas. That means it is the first day that the HOA could cite me for not having my decorations down (31 days). However, it was an awesome day and I was able to get just about everything down.

01/13/2017

I finally got around to counting our donations. This year we raised $985.65. Thank you to everyone who donated. All of the donations will be turned over to St. Anne's Episcopal Church for their mission programs.

What a gorgeous (if a bit windy) day to be up on the roof. All the lights, stars and cords are down!

Looks like Wednesday and Thursday will be good days to take down the lights

Hmmm, lights look so pretty in the snow. One more night?

01/04/2017

It will be a gorgeous night for lights. Tonight is the 10th night of Christmas. Friday is the 12th day of Christmas (aka The Epiphany). That will be our last night. Last song is played at 10:30. Three nights left. Don't miss it and then complain!

Just added another song--Decorations (A Beach Boy Parody)
