The earliest forests began to emerge during the Devonian period, forming some of the first complex ecosystems on Earth. These ancient landscapes once towered over the massive organisms known as Prototaxites, which later vanished completely from our planet. It remains one of the most unusual and otherworldly environments we can imagine.
