Dancer (2023). Digital collage printed as a Photopolymer. More written below....

Images taken from a TikTok, DALLE-2, my camera reel, and stock photos. In the video that inspired this work, a young woman performs popular dances outdoors while a wildfire creeps towards her from behind. The comments I saw on it were absolutely vile- hating on the "stupidity" of dancing while this natural disaster was coming. But as far as I know she's alright and this struck me as a really iconic scene. The world is burning- what's Gen-Z to do?? Might be too late to fix the damage we've done to this planet. But you only get one life so "f**k it we ball"

Car crash 1 (oil on panel- 12" x 12"). 2022
The beginning of my fixation on crashed cars from last semester. The color & composition is based on one of the many AI images I was generating at the time. I might post some of those but don't really want to have to take a side in that battle. I also risk revealing that my reference imagery is sometimes more engaging than the paintings πŸ˜…

Lil frog study (oil)
For those interested- some life updates below...

Been a minute since I've posted here. Surprise, I'm alive and still painting!

Back in July I moved to Tampa and have started working towards my Masters of Fine Art at USF. I was lucky enough to lock down a TA position for a combined intermediate & advanced printmaking class which has been hugely fulfilling so far. The professor I'm working with is the definition of a "master printer" so I'm soaking up all the information & techniques from her that I can. The real joy though is helping all the undergrads with their work :-) Even though being a TA is just dipping my toes into the world of fine arts instruction, I'm already really enthusiastic about it. These experiences have been a helpful reminder for where my career as an artist could lead to and why I wanted a graduate degree in the first place!

In terms of art making, I've (mostly) pushed aside my love of the natural landscape in pursuit of different subjects. It's been a struggle leaving my comfort zone but the goal is to continue forward into uncharted territory with the hopes of both learning about myself and developing further as an artist. No idea what kind of work I'll be making by the 3rd year of this program but I'm really excited for the journey.

Overall, things are good. I'm lucky to be surrounded by awesome people and have a wide support system. Couldn't do it without the homies. Specific shout out to everyone who purchased work before I left and funded this grand adventure!

Much love to you all for sticking around.

-Tom

Self Portrait via We**am. 2022
Painted from life, acrylic on canvas. 16" x 20"

Been thinking a lot about how we view the world through the medium of the internet/lens of a digital display. With this self portrait I was thinking about how to access a genuine "reflection" of myself, in the same way you can paint a self portrait in the mirror. With the we**am on a live feed, I maintained the traditional ritual of posing while painting.

Looking back at this work I find it interesting that I could never make direct eye contact with myself. I either try to look at my digital image (where my reflected eyes appear to dart away) or I directly address the camera in an effort to create "eye contact" and I'm only met with a small black aperture.

Maybe that's a bit vague but it feels like the beginning of a conversation worth having.

It's almost here!! Been a long time since I've had an opening reception and I'm so thankful for the opportunity to both show these works in such a beautiful space. University Wine Company is an awesome establishment and I can't wait to sip some wine and talk art :-)

To anyone reading this whole post, thank you. But also, please leave a comment or share this to your story! I'm hoping to raise money for an upcoming move and any extra eyes I can get on this ad would really help out. Many thanks ❀️

Sneak peek of my exhibition at University Wine Company

Opening reception is March 10th from 6-8pm! If you're interested in purchasing an original painting from my series of local landscapes, this is the very best time. All works are marked down to help raise money for my upcoming move. (Made possible by the generous management at UWC taking zero commission on sales! They rock!!!)

There will be light refreshments provided as well as a free glass of wine on me! Gotta get there early for that though :-)

Works will be on display through the rest of the month

One of my favorite plein air paintings of all time. Painted from life at for "Monet's Picnic", a fundraiser supporting the . Still wet, this work was immediately entered in a raffle so I really only had a moment with the finished piece itself. It was a hilariously awful day to paint (so cold, windy, and raining) but full of friendly faces and to this day a really fond memory.

"One Year Ago Today" (2018)
Acrylic on canvas, 36" x 48" More below...

Just recently took fresh photos of this one for my portfolio and figured it would be a good time to repost as well. Some explanation on the composition: This scene is composed of two photos taken exactly one year apart. The foreground shows me in my apartment at the time all worn out from finals, hanging with my cat(s). The background is painted from a photo of Rob Grote drumming at a house show in Philly as a part of the Straw Hats. I found the latter photo through my "memories" on Google Photos and felt compelled to put it with the shots I had just taken. At the time this was thrown together just to make a composition but I now see it as a much more reflective piece.

High Street (Summer, 2021). Oil on canvas and painted exclusively from life.

If you've been following my work, you may recognize this composition from the first version of "High Street" I painted over the course of 13 days in Fall of 2020. At the time, that was the most sessions I'd ever put into a plein air painting. Now I've got a new record! To complete this work I returned to the same location, during the same window of time (for a consistent quality of light) for over 17 days. A labor of love :-P

If you like this painting, consider buying a print from my Etsy page! Link:
