Faculty Announcement: The School of Theatre invites applications for a full-time Voice Teacher position in the nationally renowned Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) Musical Theatre program. This is a two-year Fixed-Term, non-tenure track appointment, with the possibility of renewal. The position will work with head of Musical Theatre, and other faculty, to continue to build on the Program’s many strengths in voice training for the musical theatre artist. Duties to primarily include teaching private voice to BFA musical theatre majors. In addition to teaching the technique surrounding the voice for musical theatre, there is an expectation that the studio time includes ear training, musicianship, and song interpretation. Classical repertoire and technique are also a part of the studio training. Other duties to include a variety of studio and coaching situations with BFA musical theatre students as well as teaching singing to BFA acting majors. The ideal candidate will have a passion for remaining current in the field with regard to evolving styles, techniques, and voice pedagogy. Participation in student recruitment and other faculty activities is expected. Qualifications include significant professional experience in teaching musical theatre singing - as well as professional experience singing musical theatre. Knowledge of all styles of musical theatre is expected – including pop, rock, country, and rap/spoken word. Candidate must have a comprehensive knowledge of the musical theatre repertoire and possess some piano skills. A terminal degree is preferred. Salary commensurate with experience. About Musical Theatre at Penn State: Penn State’s BFA in Musical Theatre is a rigorous professional training program in the School of Theatre. Students train in all three areas of musical theatre with the largest dedicated musical theatre faculty in the country. The mission of the program is to train students to successfully compete in the professional musical theatre Industry – while providing a technical and artistic foundation for life-long creative output. Graduates of the program regularly perform on Broadway and around the country and world.

THE PENN STATE MUSICAL THEATRE VOCAL PEDAGOGY WORKSHOP (BEL CANTO CAN BELTO)

The PSMTVP WORKSHOP is a two-and-a-half-day vocal intensive designed to introduce professional voice users, singers, voice teachers, and vocal health professionals to the techniques specific to singing for musical theatre.

Topics covered will include:

*Teaching and Musical Theatre Techniques for Women and Men, (Belting, Mixing, etc.)

*Registration - the Flexible Passaggio in Musical Theatre

*Male and Female Musical Theatre Vocal Techniques (the Differences and Similarities)

*Alexander Technique for Voice Workshop and Master Class

*Vocal Styles in a Myriad of Musical Theatre Genres

*Vocal Health for Musical Theatre Singers

*Musical Theatre loves Classical - Comparative and Supportive Pedagogical Techniques

Participants will have an opportunity to discover how to make these sounds themselves in a supportive, friendly environment, and will leave with greatly enhanced pedagogical knowledge, confidence, and skill for performing and teaching in musical theatre styles. A thirty minute private lesson with one of our faculty is included in the tuition.
