During Penn State's Pride month, we are sharing works in the Palmer collection by LGBTQIA2S+ artists like this still life by G. Daniel Massad.

Daniel Massad is a photorealistic pastel artist who works and lives in Pennsylvania. After earning degrees in English at Princeton and the University of Chicago, he worked for a time as a psychotherapist before making the decision to pursue graduate work in painting in 1979. While working on his MFA at the University of Kansas, he made the unexpected shift from abstraction to still life and began using pastels as his main medium. Through four decades of work, Massad's style has come into relief as still life arrangements of masterfully detailed blocks, fruits, vegetables, flowers, bowls, bottles, and other objects overlaid with constellations of maps, words, numbers, or personal symbols integrated meaningfully into the compositions. The non-figurative forms give a powerful sense of narrative, often autobiographical, and use visual markers to tell stories from within via the textured realism and subtle beauty of his stunningly executed pastels.

It's April! That means it's Penn State's Pride Month! How will you celebrate? We'll be sharing works by LGBTQIA2S+ artists in our collection, like this self-portrait by artist George Tooker.

George Clair Tooker, Jr. was an American figurative painter who lived and worked mainly in Brooklyn, NY. Many of his works drew from the universal experiences of modern, urban life and its social withdrawal and isolation, but others depicted aspects of private life and commented on the positives of intimacy and connection. He and his longtime partner, artist William R. Christopher, participated in the Civil Rights Movement in New York and Vermont, where they ended up living. Interestingly, even though he was gay, Tooker was a practicing Catholic, proving that you can do and believe whatever makes you happy.

To all our LGBTQIA2S+ friends: we see you and we value you! Happy Pride Month!

Palmer in Your Pocket #2.13: Enigmatic Engravings

In this latest edition of Palmer in Your Pocket, we will be looking at an artist featured in a current Palmer exhibition: Albrecht Dürer: https://youtu.be/hLiVUZVOo_Q

Hailing from Nuremberg, Germany, Dürer became widely popular for his paintings and draftsmanship, but it was his unique, high-quality woodcuts and engravings that would make him a legend of the Renaissance period. See works by him on view now in "Printmaking in the Age of Dürer" at the Palmer until May 8.
