I had a wonderful 2-week residency at I-Park Foundation earlier this September! The experience combined and nature, my two greatest inspirations, and allowed a rare opportunity for me to stretch my wings in site-responsive . I’m honored to have worked alongside 7 visual and musical who offered me words of wisdom and encouragement, and whose senses of purpose and enthusiasm were infectious.

I am glad to have learned from the other AIRs. I am enormously grateful to Ralph, Joanne, Carm, Kathy, Sarah, and all staff and leadership doing incredible work at I-Park. Finally I’m happy I was able to share my art with visitors, Nana and my “bonus mom.” What a wonderful experience!

I will definitely be returning to I-Park soon, and you should, too! Their next open trails day is October 10 and my sculpture will be on view (minus the center and lights, which are for special occasions only). It’s an incredibly unique park experience that I recommend to all creatives.

☀️Thermogenesis, the culmination of 2 weeks’ work at the I-Park Foundation’s residency program! Loosely based on one of the few plants that generates its own “body heat” to emerge through late-winter ice, Eastern skunk cabbage, the signifies trailblazing new beginnings 🌱. Thermogenesis plays with rapidly changing light during the daytime. Translucent fabric catches the quick shifts in light as it reaches past the canopy and understory to the forest floor. The sculpture is delicate, like the fleeting “spring ephemeral” blooms including its namesake.

Skunk cabbage itself is older than “glamorous” pollinators (bees, butterflies) and developed its distinctive smell to attract flies and beetles. Although it’s unpopular for this reason, it is an ubiquitous and critical native plant here in CT, feeding bugs and black bears when other food is scarce at the end of winter. For these reasons (and its wild appearance), it’s among my favorite plants!

I’ve had a blast creating this sculpture, Thermogenesis, for my I-Park residency and upcoming Gala this Saturday! I’m immensely grateful to the I-Park staff, leadership, and fellow AIRs who have supported me along the way. 🙏 This sculpture is named and loosely modeled after one of the few plants that generates its own heat. This plant, Eastern skunk 🦨 cabbage, trail-blazes its way through the earliest spring snow. It is closely related to peace lilies and jack in the pulpits, and giant co**se flowers. Stay tuned or attend our Gala for the finished, site responsive product! 🎨

Come see what I’m creating at I-Park Foundation ! Join us for Open Trails + Music this Saturday from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. 🎨 I-Park is generally closed to the public and ny residency here is short, so this and the upcoming Fundraiser on September 19 will be your only opportunities to see my newest big sculpture! 👀 I’m curious, what does she look like to you? 🤔

Here’s a glimpse into last month’s prep for my residency at I-Park Foundation , where I am working through 9/20! 🥳I made the base for my sculpture in advance of the residency. Today I finished welding the frame! I accidentally made it too big to fit through the studio door or into my car, so it will live its whole life outdoors on the grounds of I-Park😅 next step is adding fabric! I’ll be making another enormous plant native to CT…TBA shortly😉

I took a little family trip with Anton Kot and our moms to explore Governor’s Island over the weekend. My installation and painting will be up at Governor’s Island with The Climate Imaginarium Climate Cafe NYC through 10/25 and I’ll be gallery sitting on 10/11! Come visit me😁 It’s very rare for me to tour my staircase installations, but this location in a historic building provided the perfect setting for me. I’m forever grateful for the opportunity🥰 Come visit before the flowers return to my home!

I didn’t get a great shot of Toxicodendron when I made it back in 2021, so here it is hanging in Cafe Atlantique, Milford, in a show curated by thehechyeomoyeo ! I’m so happy to get this one back out in the world. Toxicodendron features poison ivy (toxicodendron radicans) in its beautiful fall colors.

Here I am during my first (?) visit to I-Park Foundation up in East Haddam, CT, back in 2018! I was just beginning to find my artistic voice through time spent in nature. 🦋I’m not sure who created these sculptures from found materials (if anyone recognizes them, enlighten me), but these artworks profoundly impacted young me.

Soon I’ll create my own sculptures out in these woods! I have an upcoming 2wks residency at I-Park this September. As I pulled together application materials a few months back, I reflected deeply on the experiences that brought me here. I grew tremendously through my first residency at the Norwalk Art Space. Collaboration and interaction are critical to my art (yes, even despite being an introvert), and the encouragement of my colleagues changed the trajectory of my art.

At I-Park I’m excited to mesh my sculptural and painterly languages and symbolisms, as well as create art that interacts with both humans and nature (being both large and outdoors🌱). My practice flourishes with woven threads of installation and relief, painting and sculpture. I look forward to creating more site-responsive sculptures that use sculptural and painterly sensibilities in tandem.
