Camalla**s invades the fishes as soon as they eat the worms or eat the secondary host. A pair of Nematodes setup shop and start breeding at about 3 weeks after ingestion. The Nematode is a live bearer so there are no eggs to worry about but there is a secondary host and most established aquariums have the Copepods necessary to continue the life cycle of the parasite.

Shrimp don't play a part in the parasites life style except they might carry a few of the tiny worms around with their body parts. A few days without fish and/or several changes of water eliminate them from the chain of events that infest the fishes.

In 20 years, I have found only one compound that affects the Nematode strongly to kill it and that is Levamisole. It is not fed to the fish but dissolved into their water they live in. EVERYTHING WET NEEDS to be treated. Put everything back together the way it is most comfortable for the fish. If you moved the fish to a different glass cage, it is infested now as well.

The parasite invades the fish in 3 weeks and after 4 weeks it is distributing the live young to the living quarters for all to become infested. It takes about 6 weeks before the Nematode appears at the a**s of the fish to be discovered.

Hey Charles- the flubendazole you sent me earlier this year turned out to be the miracle cure for the parasites that had cost me easily a few thousand over the years in dead discus.
It even brought one back from near death. I have a store nearby that primarily sells discus and little else, but I've found many of these come out of the store already pre-loaded with parasites so I've been very protective of whatever goes in with the other discus. Now that I'm looking to replenish my losses from before, I checked and I only have 5 grams of flubendazole left for my 30-gallon quarantine tank. Do you still have any to sell so I can treat newcomers before they go in the display tank? One of the new fish has a white stringy poo and little appetite, the other three seem fine, for now
Thanx in advance

The Nematode often uses a secondary host to spread its tiny new born larva throughout the available environment. A water flea, the Cyclops, is a secondary host and often comes along with plants or fish from the pet store or some unknowing friend infested with the Nematode. The fish eat the water fleas and the Nematode they contain and become infested with the parasite. It takes about 3 to 4 months for a pair of worms to set up house inside the fishes intestines and begin producing live tiny Nematodes to spread around. One species of Camalla**s requires the secondary host while the other can be directly transmitted fish to fish.

Levamisole kills the Nematode in the fish and the Cyclops. Without finding a secondary host the Larva dies in a matter of days. Upon being eaten by a water flea, the larva molt into an infectious resting stage for 3 to 4 months as long as the Cyclops lives. The other species of Camalla**s does not require a secondary host and can be eaten by a fish and the infestation can begin sooner. After about 3 months the fish can be infecting all the water but one will not see the worms at the a**s for another month or more.

It really would be best to treat the whole community of fishes. It takes a lot of work doing water changes, etc., but this is the only way one can be sure to wipe out the infestation.

Your 55 gallon tank will need only one 5 gram pack to treat twice. That is about 100 gallons. The remainder of your water, a 30 and two 10’s will require a second pack of Levamisole. That comes to $15.00. Priority Mail Postage is $6.75. I would treat your 11 gallon tank as if it had fish in it. That way you would kill off any larva present.

Two weeks ago I received a request from Nice, France. First time in that country. It took 7 days to get from St Louis to Nice, but it made it. These Nematodes are all over the world's aquariums.

Hi Charles :)

So, hopefully you receive the below email string. Funny, because I realized I asked you for help about a year ago and then never followed up!
To sum up- I had had evident camalla**s worms in my fish for quite some time and was at the end of my rope and I tried levamisole. It didn't work, and sent my fish to the bottom in evident distress. So I ordered some flubendazole from you and followed your exact instructions with dissolving it in warmed up tank water (this took a looooot of stirring) and massive water changes and the worms never showed up again!!
Thank you so much for saving my tank.

I was thinking of this because I have discovered the culprit- a petco near my house! Apparently their guppy supplier is infested and not knowledgable enough to know what to do.
So I wanted to tell you this, on the off chance that, once in a blue moon you have a client that has no luck with levamisole.

Best wishes,
Molly

Hi Charles --

You helped me in 2014 as I was dealing with Camalla**s worms and I was able to save my Angel Fish.. so THANK YOU!

I have another friend, Jose M-, who is unfortunately facing the task of having to treat his tank because of the Camalla**s worm. He will be placing an order today via your order page (inkmkr.com).

Thank you for being the hero in our fish community! There was another gal that I sent your way last year to order the Levamisole and her fish were also saved.

Thank you Thank you Thank you!!

Camalla**s worms are internal, parasitic nematodes that infect fresh and saltwater fishes. They are more common than most aquarists realize and have been showing up in places like petco, petsmart and walmart.
