I got my first Canon film camera and set up my own darkroom in our basement. I concentrated mainly on black and white photography those days. I

got my first digital camera in 2005 and have practiced almost daily since. I love photographing all aspects of nature - wildlife, plants, landscapes, insects, etc...

I love seeing and taking pictures of the wonders of what our world has to offer - Beautiful landscapes, wildlife in action, close ups of flowers and butterflies, and more. Sub-adult Bald Eagle flying over Belmont Bay at Mason Neck State Park. This eagle is likely between 2 and 3 years old based on the extent of white plumage. Bald Eagles do not have the iconic white head and white tail until they are five years old. They are born all brown and each year gain more white feathers. Enjoy!

Tech info: Canon R5 with RF 100-500mm lens. Taken at 500mm at 1/3200 sec at f/7.1 and ISO 1000. Dialed in -1/3 stop of exposure as to not blow out white feathers and other highlights. Processed in Lightroom Classic and DXO PureRaw.

The American Coot is not a duck but is a closer relative to the Cranes and Rails. It does not have webbed feet like a duck but has lobes of skin on each of its toes. Groups of Coots are called covers or rafts. They are a migratory bird that can be found in Virginia during the winter. Enjoy!

Pair of White-breasted Nuthatches building nest in cavity of tree. Since this net is in our backyard I will hopefully they will have chicks that I can follow. A year-round resident of Virginia you will often see this small bird moving (often facing down) the trunk of trees. They get their name from their habit of pushing large nuts into tree bark and then hitting them with their bill to get to the nut inside.

Tech info: Canon R5 with RF 100-500mm lens. Taken at 500mmm at 1/1600 sec at f/7.1 and ISO 640. Processed in Lightroom and DXO PureRaw.

Bald Eagle Nests at D**e Marsh in Alexandria, Virginia. I've shared a lot of my photographs of Bald Eagles but today I wanted to share photos of the two nests in D**e Marsh. Click on photos for best view.

From journeynorth.org - A Bald Eagle nest is called an aerie and can be 8.2 feet wide, 13 feet deep, and 1.1 tons in weight. In the first photo you can see one of the Eagle's perch above and to the left of the nest and in the second photo the eagle can be seen in the nest. This gives you a good idea of the size of these nests! The wingspan of eagles are typically 6 to seven feet. Based on that I estimate these nests are about 8 feet wide.

I've observed these nests for about five years now and they have gotten bigger every year. Another nest I watched in Arlington fell a couple of years ago as a result of a storm. I am hoping these nests are not getting so big that they are vulnerable to wind or that the weight will cause tree to fall.

Bald Eagle grabs a fish from Burke Lake! This is a photograph that I captured a few years ago. It is still one of my favorite photos of a Bald Eagle fishing. I’ll post the entire series later but this was one of a series of photographs showing a Great Blue Heron dropping a fish in the lake and the Eagle swooping down to claim the prize!

Male Ring-necked Duck at Burke Lake. Sometimes it can be hard to determine/see the characteristic/details that led to an animal being given a particular name. The Ringed-neck duck was named for the hard to see chestnut collar on its black neck. Not apparent at a distance the people who named this duck likely described it using dead specimens. The Great Blue Heron rookery on Vesper Island at Burke Lake was very busy yesterday as the Herons were maintaining their nests high in the trees. The birds were flying from the nests to retrieve sticks and then returning to nests to repair their nests. For the most part they are using existing nests from previous years. But, like most dwellings the nests need maintenance! 😀 There were probably at least 25 Herons present yesterday. In the past I have seen as many as forty so it is likely more will arrive soon. Enjoy!

Black Swan at Burke Lake in Virginia! I was at Burke Lake photographing the Great Blue Heron rookery on Vesper Island when I saw this large dark swan. It was about twice the size of nearby geese. When I got home, I did some research and discovered that it looked just like a Black Swan. But Black Swans are not native to the United States. Black Swans are native to Australia and have been introduced to England and Japan. But in the United States they are most likely escaped pets or zoon animals that have found themselves in the wild. How fun to see and photograph this bird in our neighborhood!!

Female and Male Bufflehead Ducks at Burke Lake. The first photo with the male Bufflehead in the middle is probably the best view of the male's purple-green head plumage! Buffleheads are diving ducks meaning that they dive underwater to catch fish. The name "bufflehead" comes from buffalo head and refers to duck's large-headed appearance. I don't know about you but I never heard of buffalo head either. 🤣

D**e Island at Sunrise. This small island is located offshore of the D**e Marsh Wildlife Preserve. One or both of the mating pair of Bald Eagles that have a nest in the Preserve will perch on the trees on this island. I have captured photographs of them mating, washing themselves in the shallow water near the island, and hunting for food from their perches. I hope you enjoy this beautiful sunrise!

Proud to announce that the below photograph of a Male Hooded Merganser flying right at me won Gold in the Birds - Behavior category of the World Nature Photography Awards.

I captured this image at Huntley Meadows Park on January 18, 2021. I was watching a pair of Hooded Mergansers and hoped that I could get them in flight. Knowing that ducks tend to speed up and swim in a straight line before taking off, I watched for this behavior. Sure enough they began swimming faster and straight and took off. What I did not expect was that the male Merganser would fly directly at me!!😀

You can find this photo and more on my website cschmidtphotos.com.

Great opportunity to photograph a Barred Owl at the D**e Marsh Wildlife Preserve on Thursday! Normally very hard to find in the open during the day, I and a few other photographers got very lucky when this owl flew from deep underbrush to an open perch right over the trail! 😀 When the owl decided to fly it flew right towards me! Enjoy!

Bald Eagle dives for fish as Geese watch!!! 🦅

Spent some time at Burke Lake photographing two Bald Eagles, Cormorants, and various ducks. This was one of the more interesting images. I was watching a Bald Eagle that was perched in a tree across the lake from where I was standing. It suddenly took off and spiraled to the water. The geese did not seem surprised or concerned. The Eagle just barely touched the water and then flew away empty taloned. When I processed this image, I saw what I think was a fish in the water where the eagle touched the water. If you look closely at the image, you can see a small splash of water and a fish. The fish apparently dove deeper into water before eagle could catch it. Enjoy!

Please let me know if this is a image you would like me to put on my website or if there is another photograph, I have posted on social media but can't find it on my website.

On Monday, I spent about an hour following a pair of Red-tailed Hawks as the male followed the female up and down the powerlines near our home. They appeared to successfully mate (see second image). I've never seen two red-tailed hawks at this location, so I suspect this is a newly formed pair. According to some sources, Red-tailed Hawks will often pair for life. I hope this is the case here. Hopefully, I can find a nest nearby. Enjoy!

I love the expression on this Great Blue Heron's face! 😀 Looks like it just thought of a very funny joke! Wish I was in on it. 🤣 Taken at Huntley Meadows Park just after sunrise. The light on this heron was perfect and I love the contrast of the blue and grey plumage against the copper red of the foliage. Enjoy!

Tech info: Canon R5 with RF 100-500mm lens. Taken at 500mm at 1/3200 sec at f/7.1 and ISO 1000. Dialed in -1 exposure compensation as to not blow out the white highlights on heron's head.

Jack hanging out with me at Burke Lake today. I’ll post some photos of the Bald Eagles, Ducks, and Cormorants over the next few days. Now’s a good time to get some different views of the lake because the water is so low that you can walk on the “beach” in many locations. I think they’ve let the water get low to support a project at the Marina.

Hi everyone! First, thank you for following me! I'd like your input in a decision I am debating. Could you please fill out the attached survey to help me make an informed decision. Thank you!

As most of you know I sell my photographs as well as post them for all to enjoy! 😀. I post on FB and IG as a way of providing people with what is hopefully, an enjoyable and educational look at nature. I also post as a way to advertise my website and hopefully make a few sales. I am debating about changing my business model to include the sale of digital copies. The above survey will help me make this decision as well as get to know my existing and potential customers better.

Thanks for your input.

As a wildlife photographer, I follow the activities of many animals throughout the year. Over the past couple of weeks, I have observed activity that normally occurs in early to mid-March. At least some animals believe that spring is going to come early this year. For example, some of the Great Blue Herons that occupy the rookery at Burke Lake have arrived and started working on their nests. Over the past several years the Herons have arrived in MArdh. Likewise, chipmunks (which hibernate in the winter) have emerged over the past few days. We may get a dose of winter yet here in Northern Virginia, but it looks like the animals are betting that we won't, or it will be short-lived! What's your guess?

Red-winged Blackbird blowing smoke! This has been on my bucket list of photos to capture after seeing a similar photo by Kathrin Swoboda that won the Grand Prize of the 2019 Audobon Photography Awards. Her photo was more remarkable because the breath of the red-winged blackbird was forming smoke rings. While my photo does not have smoke rings, I am thrilled I was able to capture the breath of this bird. Enjoy!

Tech info: Canon R5 with RF 100-500mm lens. Teken at 500mm at 1/3200 sec at f/7.1 and ISO 3200. Dialed in -1 stop of exposure compensation which helped make the breath more visible. Processed in Lightroom Classic and DXO PureRaw.

Visited Huntley Meadows Park yesterday and found conditions were perfect for reflections. Wind was calm and no clouds in the sky! I was standing in the perfect place to catch this male Hooded Merganser as he took off from the back pond. In the second photo it would be hard to determine which was the reflection if i turned the photo upside down! 😀Enjoy!

Tech info: Canon R5 with RF 100-500mm lens. Taken at 1/3200 sec at f/7.1 and ISO 1600. I dialed in -2/3 of a stop so as to not blow out the white highlights on the Merganser. Processed in Lightroom Classic and DXO PureRaw.
