Today, on International Trans Day of Visibility, we want to show that trans scientists are integral members of the scientific community. It is important to remember that trans individuals have always been here and they are an integral part of our communities and the history of science. We share this list in the hope that these scientists and their work will inspire current and future scientists of every community.

While we have only picked out a few to highlight today, we hope you take time to engage with their stories, celebrate these individuals, and to learn more about other trans scientists in your field.

Check out our website for more information on each of these incredible scientists, as well as additional links to their science and stories. Link in bio.

Lynn Margulis

1938-2011

The woman in science we’d like to highlight a prominent member of the scientific and UMass communities .

Dr. Lynn Margulis was an evolutionary biologist that revolutionized biology by furthering the theory that eukaryotic organelles were once prokaryotic cells, known now as the endosymbiont theory. Her work is widely considered one of the most important contributions to biology in the 20th century. Dr. Margulis served as a UMass professor here from 1988 until her death in 2011.

The painting “Endosymbiosis: An Homage to Lynn Margulis” was done by Shoshanah Dubiner, an accomplished artist that takes inspiration from the forms of the natural world. She is currently based in Ashland, Oregon.
