On July 5, 1918, the excursion steamboat Columbia was returning from Al Fresco Park when disaster struck in the darkness near today's Creve Coeur.

The boat struck a submerged obstruction, rolled onto its side, and sank within minutes.

Eighty-seven people lost their lives, making it one of the deadliest tragedies ever to occur on the Illinois River.

Here's a song I wrote about the incident. The disaster ended the excursion industry out of Peoria until the Julia Belle Swain arrived.

I'm still in the area this week. At 10:00 Tuesday, I am excited to return to the Jacksonville Public Library. That's where "The Cat Came Back" was recorded live back in 1986. WOW.
Thursday I will be a part of History Comes Alive in the Senate of the Old State Capital. For you dulcimer folks, I will be teaching a dulcimer workshop at the Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site on Saturday.

Another Gebhard Woods Dulcimer Festival has come and gone. Wonderful music and friends abounded. I amazingly didn't take any photos, but I carried wonderful memories of audience, workshop participants, and the folks who stopped and talked. The festival is tentatively scheduled for the 2nd weekend in June, 2027. I hope you can make it. This photo was taken by long-time friend and musical accomplice, Debbie Porter and bass expert Dave Stanley. Well, technically, I took the photo, but it was her idea and phone.

Good news! Hugo's banjo has finally gone in for repairs after being damaged in the Janesville Flood. I am also happy to report 3 of his books have a small initial reprinting to cover incoming orders.
