Going Yard competed in the Sizzle and Splash BBQ contest in Winter Springs this weekend. This was a Florida BBQ Association event and attended by some of the top teams in Florida BBQ.

The contest was in support of the Wesley Seth Foundation committed to Water Safety for children in the Central Florida region. Thank you Libby Baity for putting on this event.

Going Yard had a great day this weekend. Here is the tale of the tape.

Chicken: 2nd Place
Ribs: 2nd Place
Pork: 1st Place
Brisket 4th Place

Overall: Grand Champion

Congrats to Pop's Smoke on the Hill Competition BBQ Team for RGC. It is always a fun competition when you are in the field.

Also, Big Shout Out to Heath Riles BBQ on winning Memphis In May back to back. You are an inspiration and we are so proud to be associated with your brand. Going Yard BBQ is a brand ambassador for Heath Riles BBQ and we are proud to use their products in our program.

Also thanks to the Atlanta BBQ store for its support of our BBQ journey. I can always count on them to ship me all of the BBQ products that I use in time for every contest. I always order on a Sunday evening and my order shows up at the house by Wednesday. Thanks, Ellen for all you do.

We are going to take a few weeks off before our next event. Our next BBQ contest is at the South Carolina Festival of Discovery in Greenwood, SC in July. We also will be cooking the inaugural FBA one day contest in Tampa on June 13th. Come join us for a day of friendly cooking. Competition is for Burgers, Sauce and Dessert. It is going to be a fun event.

We traveled down to Auburndale this past weekend for the Pitmasters in Paradise BBQ contest at the Margaritaville resort. This was a first year sanctioned event. We had a great time and it was nice place to hold a BBQ event.

Our weekend finished as such:

Chicken -31st (ouch)
Ribs - 2nd
Pork - 6th
Brisket - 19th

Overall 15th out of 35 teams

Congrats to our good friends Double Barrel Smokers on their first GC and to Keepin’ It Smokin’ Competition BBQ on the RGC. Well done both of you.

Just a quick post from our weekend where we attended the Downtown Showdown BBQ Cook-Off in Lake City. I was solo ride again as Charlotte is still recovering from her shoulder injury and was unable to come with me. Sure miss her help on these cook weekends.

We started Friday night with a one-meat rib burn. We did well and finished 4th out of 21 teams who participated.

Saturday morning brought the normal contest and we started out well. The only notable change for us this contest is that we put the new Outlaw offset smoker into service. Boy, very impressed with its performance. It contributed to our success this weekend.

Tale of the tape:

Chicken 12th
Ribs 7th
Pork 17th
Brisket 3rd

Overall 4th with a 702.2860, with 41 teams in attendance. We had a good day.

Special thanks to those that help us on our BBQ journey. Heath Riles BBQ for those wonderful rubs and sauces, especially the Hot Honey Peach Glaze and Peach rub which made those Friday night ribs so good. Special thanks to The Atlanta BBQ Store which keeps us stocked up on rubs and sauces and other BBQ items which make our life easier.

Comp Week has finally arrived. We are getting prepped for next week's Downtown Showdown BBQ Cook-Off in Lake City. Going Yard is looking forward to returning home. Charlotte grew up on the farm there and our children were born in North Florida. We have lots of family and friends there so looking forward to going home. Chances are Charlotte is not going to make it as she is still in a lot of pain from her pickleball injury.

I brought the trailer home today to load the drums and stock the pantry. A peek inside the back of the trailer shows a new cooker added to the arsenal. We have joined Team Outlaw BBQ Smokers with our newly acquired 2440 Patio model. Looking forward to putting it through its paces next Saturday.

We took a nice ride this weekend down to Belle Glade, Fl for the 3rd Annual Torry Island BBQ Showdown. This is our 3rd year at this contest and it has quickly become one of our favorites. They really do a good job supporting their teams and making sure everyone is taken care of. It is a community event and we like those types of contests. Thanks to the entire Torry Island BBQ Showdown team, you are the best. Special shoutout to the Brewers, you are the best!!!!!! We cannot wait until next year.

I also want to thank a few people who were very good to me this weekend. Many of you know that my wife and cooking partner, Charlotte, took a fall on the pickle ball court a few weeks ago and injured her shoulder. Because of that, I was solo ride for the contest. Many thanks Christi Baker, Ron Baker, Samantha Summerlin-Tomlinson, Daniel Tomlinson, Bonnie Songer and Sam Songer. They adopted me for the weekend and made sure I had meals. Many Thanks and it was greatly appreciated. I enjoyed the company and the fellowship. What made it the best is everyone in our group got to walk to the stage this weekend. Congratulations on your calls!!!!!

Congratulations to Tillmans BBQ on GC, 3 perfect 180 scores on their day and to Accutech BBQ on the RGC (Brad Fries). What a good day for both of you. THANKS FOR REPPIN FLORIDA BBQ!!

We had a good day. I thought I had a good cook and was looking forward to awards. Chicken is always my nemsis but thought I had turned in good boxes for ribs, pork and brisket. My score sheet tended to agree with that because I won all of my tables for ribs, pork and brisket. So here is the final tally:

Chicken - 25th (I was on the table of death, #96)
Ribs - 15th ( #1 on my table)
Pork - 1st ( #1 on my table)
Brisket - 9th ( #1 on my table)

Overall - 13th

My score for pork was a perfect perfect 180 (all six judges rated my entry excellent). This is very hard to accomplish in KCBS. Tillmans BBQ also had a perfect perfect score in pork. Somehow Going Yard BBQ won the tiebreaker allowing us to bring home the pig. Congratulations to Tillman Lee Nelson III and Aimee Nelson on the Perfect Perfect score and the GC.

Thanks to Kings BBQ and Ryan King for the pep talk this week. It was greatly appreciated.

Next up for us is the Downtown Showdown BBQ Cook-Off in Lake City in a few weeks. We will take some needed downtime and reload for this contest.

Going Down like it’s Superbowl weekend or something like that.

Going Yard BBQ was at the first FBA sanctioned event in Apalachicola, Florida this weekend. Charlotte, Jake and I had a fun time this weekend and many thanks to the Apalachicola community for putting on a great event.

Many Congratulations to Sam Songer, Bonnie and Done Right Smokin Bbq for their first FBA GC. It was so much fun getting to celebrate with you on Saturday night. Many congratulations also to Joshua Langford and the Puck Brothers team on the RGC. It was great watching you and your success this weekend.

I thought we had a great cook this weekend and I was generally happy with our turn-ins. However, the judges were not as enamored with our offerings as we were except for one. In the end we finished 9th overall and had one call on the night, a dinger. We had a 1st place call in pork with a perfect score of 200. Because the FBA counts all of the judges scoring the turn-in, a perfect 200 equates to what is known as a perfect perfect score in other sanctioning bodies. It is a rarity for FBA contests and it is a call all cook teams hope for. It was also our first time cooking the pork on our new offset smoker, the
