What is spalted wood?

Spalting occurs when a fungus causes patterns or coloration in wood. There are three main types of spalting, zone lines, white rot, and pigmentation.
Zone lines occur when two or more fungi meet and build a "wall" to protect themselves and their territory from competitors, this appears as thin black lines that can create beautiful patterns.
White rot creates a bleached appearance as it digests the lignin in the wood and is often accompanied by zone lines.
A few species leave behind different colored pigments as they digest the wood, many of my pieces use wood spalted by fungus in the genus Chlorocyboria that leave behind beautiful light green to deep blue colored patterns.
