I doubted I’d sell three seats. Now 12 people a month sit around my table at Ebbie’s Bench. Let me tell you how it happened.
I kept hearing people say they wanted more access to me as an artist and wanted to learn more from me directly. I thought I was giving people what they wanted by bringing in a variety of instructors teaching a variety of glass classes. Clearly, I missed the mark.
So I created something different. I wanted a small, intimate class with plenty of time for conversation and getting to know my people. I wanted to offer things I’ve never taught before, and maybe even things I’ve never tried myself. And I wanted to give myself permission to change what I’m teaching if it doesn’t feel right, even if that’s three days before class. (Yes, this was one of those weeks!)
That’s why students don’t know what they’re making until they walk through the door. I knew I was asking a lot: sign up for a class with no idea what you’ll create. But my people signed up, and then they wanted more. So we added a second Bench class each month, and now there’s room for 12 people to explore and play.
This weekend’s class was another full and exciting one. I can’t show you the project until after the next class on 10/23 (no spoilers!), but trust me, they are truly fabulous. It capped off a weekend of big classes, a productive open studio, and a packed date night (with a birthday thrown in!).
THIS makes my heart so happy. Thank you, everyone. I’m listening, and I’m paying attention.
