She was born in Cape Verde, where both the land and the women are strong.

Her name might be Mary, Anna, or Fannie, but her story remains important.

From a young age, she learned that life would not be easy. The soil was dry, the rains were unsure. But she watched her mother rise before the sun, wrapping her head, carrying strength in her posture and grace in her quietness.

She grew up in sacrifice. Some days filled with laughter and music. Other days waiting for rain, for letters, for loved ones who had gone far away in search of better.

Because in Cape Verde, leaving is a part of Loving.

She watched brothers, uncles, and her own husband board ships chasing opportunities. And she stayed holding home together.

She became everything, mother, father, provider and protector.

Her hands told her story. Hands that cooked, cleaned, comforted. Hands that braided hair, stitched clothes, counted pennies and a well-kept home, a shared meal or a song.

She carried grief quietly, she carried love loudly.

And though the world may not always have seen her, she knew who she was-a woman rooted in survival.

Even when she left the islands she carried Cape Verde with her. In her accent. In her cooking. In her music. In the way she loved.

She is not just one woman

She is many

She is your grandmother who crossed oceans

She is your mother who held everything together

She is your daughter

She is strength

She is softness that refused to break.

She is a Cape Verdean Woman
