One year ago today, I was sitting in the hospital with my mother learning that her life would never be the same.
This past year hardest thing we have ever had to face, but through it all I have learned so much about this disease, life and love.
I have to say, that before my mother was diagnosed, I had never heard of Glioblastoma before. I was shocked to find that it makes up nearly 50% of all malignant brain cancer diagnoses at this point. It is also the least funded and has the least amount of awareness.
My mother wanted to fight this disease and was very interested in any clinical trials or research projects. Unfortunately, her case was very advanced when we got our diagnosis, but she was still inspired to ask questions and see what was available.
In that spirit, I will continue to place my efforts on bringing awareness and seeing how I can contribute to help others who have been affected by this disease.
I joined my latest cycling challenge to honor my good friend Jon McRae, but also to see the inner workings of how these fund raisers work so that I could set up my own to honor my mother and what we have been through.
While doing research, I came across the Glioblastoma Research Organization.
The Glioblastoma Research Organization is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization raising awareness and funds for new global, cutting-edge research to find a cure for glioblastoma. The organization was established in 2018 and, to date, has provided support to doctors and researchers through six fully funded projects at U.S. based leading cancer centers. GBMRO has also donated over $300K+ in the last two years and has partnered with GBM-related projects around the globe.
The Glioblastoma Research Organization itself does not engage in medical research, however it funds doctors and institutions that do so.
Amber Barbach, Founder and Director oversees administration, investment management and charitable research funding and brand partnerships for the organization. She leads the design of the overall project funding strategies and policies emphasizing the needs of Glioblastoma brain tumor research.
Amber has a personal connection to her brain cancer advocacy work. She lost her father, Lee Barbach, to Glioblastoma brain cancer in 2018.
I reached out to this organization last week and had a great conversation this morning with Azul Diez, the Director. I feel we could be laying down a good foundation to work together on creating projects to raise funding and awareness.
They have a lot of resources and they have expressed an interest in supporting my efforts as we move forward. We discussed organizing a virtual challenge (like the one I am currently doing), along with a couple other possibilities.

More news to come. There is an event I will be getting involved in this coming May that I will begin to promote.
