Work in progress. It has been too long! Watercolor and red and white enamelware - 2 of my favorites!!!

Here is Part 2 of the interview with DCOS!

Today, we’re wrapping up our interview with a local favorite-- artist, Nathalie Kelley. If you missed yesterday’s post, please take a moment to read it.

DCOS: What do you hope for Snyder in the next 5 years?

Nathalie: My dream for Snyder is what it has been since we moved our business to the square in the 90s - that the square would be a hub of activity. That there would be shoppers coming from everywhere, coming off Hwy 84 to stop and shop and eat! My husband Joe and I worked hard, back in the day, to create an interest, a reason to come to Snyder and shop.
When I opened my studio, it was in hopes that other artists would begin to display their art or workmanship! The Manhattan Coffeehouse had an artist that would sit and paint for hours. I even had several art shows there. It’s gone now.
I saw the 1818 Arthouse come and go, even after the “Tiny Art Show” received national recognition.

DCOS: Does art make a difference?

Nathalie: Yes, it does. Some art makes an impact for a moment and some for centuries. We never know what piece that will be. I remember being in a home and seeing a bluebonnet painting. I asked, ""Is that a Salinas?"" ""Why, yes it is!"" The value was over $15,000. We just never know! My hope for Snyder is for God to raise up an army of artists and artisans that will make an difference for good in this community and beyond, beyond the county, and beyond our lifetime.

Nathalie Kelley, we couldn’t agree more! DCOS is passionate about each Snyder resident present and future using their voice and gifts for the longevity of our community. Aren’t you proud to call Snyder home? Take a moment to share Nathalie’s inspirational posts with your friends and family.

I am so honored to have been selected for an interview with DCOS. This is part 1.

Today, DCOS is highlighting a unique business. Although this business isn’t brick and mortar, it’s a valuable asset to Snyder. We sat down with artist Nathalie Kelley, which many of you know and love. Nathalie’s art has filled our community with such joy. Here is our lovely conversation with Nathalie.
DCOS: When did you first know you wanted to dedicate your life to art?

Nathalie: All of my life. My parents were artists. My mom is 85 and still paints. And my grandparents on both sides were artists. I have been surrounded by art and created art for as long as I can remember. In January of 1988, we moved our family and my creative business to Snyder. At that time my art was 1,000s of small, hand-painted buttons and jewelry that we sold through the major gift markets. 1991 we moved Nathalie’s Inc. to the north side of the square. The demand for my button creations was huge and we employed other artists to paint for us. Some painted at the shop and others painted at home.
The shop was closed in 1999. In 2000, I went to work for TDCJ, but I continued to paint and create. That was when I started painting in watercolor. My watercolor paintings are the ones that have been the award winners.
On retirement in 2010, I opened a gallery/studio just off the square. That is when I started teaching watercolor classes. It was open for less than a year.

DCOS: What is your favorite aspect of serving Snyder through your art?

Nathalie: For several years, I painted murals for different businesses around town. Some were inside and other murals were outside. That was fun braving the west Texas weather elements. It was a blessing to me that these business owners wanted my mark on their walls. Some have been painted over now and that’s okay and some are still visible. My last large mural piece was at WTC.

In 2013 I started teaching painting classes at WTC College on the Square. My favorite part of those classes is the relationships that are built, one brushstroke at a time. And I love to see the progress and creativity of my students.

WOW!!! 5 years!!! IT'S MY PAINT-AVESARY!!!!
So I started to do the math. First Thursday's. 5x12=60 paintings. Wait - I painted 2 of each. 1 for the advertisements and 1 in class. That's 120.
Then the tuesday night classes. For 3 years we did 4 Tuesday nights most months that's 288 paintings or mixed media pieces. Then a couple of years ago we changed to 3 Tuesday nights that's 72 paintings.
Friends that is 480 paintings!!!
That doesn't count summer kid's class, birthday parties, church ladies paint parties, Mommy and Me or Craft Fest!!!!! Thank you, WTC-COLLEGE ON THE SQUARE for such an amazing opportunity!!!
The friendships that have been created through these classes are so, so special!!!
WHAT A BLESSING!!!
I have been reading "Double Blessing". This kinda brings it all home!!!
Ooops. I think I am going to cry!!!

In a recent workshop with Iain Stewart he encourage us to do watercolor warmups. Just play with color and consistency to see what works and what doesn't. No lines, no details, some splatters and there ya go. It is so much fun.
Then I grabbed some pens - black and white!!!

Thank you Nathalie. My daughter wanted a ponytail scrub hat and I found your pattern and subscribed to your channel! Ignored a little bit she has very fine hair so I think it will work! Next one I make won't have to have that Sean because I taped that piece together now! Lol To come to my defence, that scrap of material wouldn't have been big enough if I didn't make that mistake anyhow so we will just say it was planned!
