I choose to create with clay because I like the way the clay feels in my hands as I shape, mold, carve, and add texture to the pliable medium. In fact, handbuilding with clay can be a meditative experience. The pieces that I most enjoy creating lack uniformity and have edges and surfaces that enhance both the tactile and the visual experience. I admire the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi of finding beauty in imperfections, impermanence, and incompleteness.

I use both manmade and natural items, often discovered without really looking for them, to create the texture details.  Textures are often a result of hand carving designs/shapes into the clay, pressing an item into the clay to leave an imprint, ripping or tearing the edges of the clay, or pressing clay into a mold.  I apply a variety of underglazes, glazes, and overglazes to achieve the coloring and finish—sometimes serendipitously. I aim to assemble each piece in a manner that complements the textures, appearance, and dimensions.

I have started employing the raku firing method for select pieces. I enjoy this process largely because of the uncertainty of the results. I plan to continue using this technique as my work evolves.

I am constantly attracted—some say distracted—by textures, surfaces, patterns, and patinas. They cause me to stop and pick up a seed pod, weathered twig, rusted key, or forgotten bolt. These overlooked treasures shape the way I see and the way I create. They remind me that every material carries a history and the possibility of becoming something new.

Whether I am working in clay, paint, or mixed media, I am drawn to the conversation between intention and discovery. I enjoy exploring how materials respond, resist, and surprise me, allowing each piece to evolve through both deliberate choices and unexpected moments.

Handbuilding ceramics has become my favorite way to explore texture and form. The slow, meditative process lets me carve, imprint, layer, and refine each surface until it feels alive with its own story. The clay, my well-worn tools, glazes, and the kiln all become collaborators, leaving marks that reflect both my hand and the character of the materials themselves.

My work celebrates the beauty of imperfection, weathering, and transformation. I hope it encourages others to pause, look closely, and find wonder in the textures and quiet histories that often go unnoticed.

Across many world cultures, spiritual traditions, and sacred texts, clay represents the earth from which life springs, the malleability of the soul, our deep connection to the earth, and the divine hands shaping mortal existence.
