When I was a student at Sacred Heart school in Baton Rouge, James Rice visited us with his book, The Cajun Night Before Christmas. I remember it vividly and still have my autographed copy I got that day. This past weekend I was invited to visit Sacred Heart with my own book, The Nutcracker, a Swamp Tail. When I walked into the library and saw my book sitting next to his, it was a total pinch me moment. It was so much fun to share my book and my journey with the students.

Then I got to see my characters come to life in the form of jewelry. The Nutcracker Alligator necklace sold out in one day! It was incredible and I was so happy to be gifted the entire collection by my brother and sister in law. It was so much fun to sign books in their shoppe and meet new friends and hug old ones!

Saturday, I was invited to present a Read & Create event at . My mom frequently signed my brother and I up for art camps over the summer there when we were kids. I even still have a ceramic piece I made when I was maybe 10 on display in my home. Again, total pinch me moment!

I remember when I signed my contract with back in the fall of 2023 freaking out that I agreed to buy 250 books for my website and school visits. I worried about being able to sell them all between September and December and how many I’d have to sit on after the Christmas season. Well today, I can proudly say I alone have sold 717 BOOKS, I am sold out, has sold thousands and they are sold out in their warehouse. The only The Nutcracker, a Swamp Tail books you can get before Christmas are what you can find in a store or website. I am beyond grateful for the support of my little book and this art dream I get to live. I can assure you, more are coming!

I have one more signing this weekend at on 12/13 from 2-4pm. You can find The Nutcracker, a Swamp Tail on their website and Amazon too. More books are already being printed for next Christmas! Thank you again and Joyeux Noel! ❤️💚🐊🐭🦝🎄💂🪄

💜💛🐝 The “Mother Ginger” character was a fun one to create. In the ballet, she usually is accompanied by clowns or little children. I knew I had to have a lot of these characters and in trying to incorporate as many Louisiana “favorites” as I could, the state black bear and the honeybees just fit.

I did add a local twist, I specifically added purple to the page to go with the bees and represent Shreveport’s favorite…The City of Byrd. My husband is a proud alumni and both our children are current students. This page is for Johnny, Audrey and Jackson and the “City” that they love!

I also made sure there was a fair amount of green on the page to pay tribute to my favorite holiday and its colors of purple, gold and green! 💜💛💚 Go Jackets!

🐭 I changed the main characters names in honor of my maternal grandparents, Corinne and Robert. They grew up in Broussard, Louisiana right by Lafayette. They were proudly French and were married for over 60 years! I also used the names Billeaud which was my grandfather’s side and their name of their business th Billeaud Sugar Facorty. My grandparents were so special to me. My brother and I spent countless afternoons and summer days at their house. We were so lucky they were just a block away our entire childhood. My daughter’s middle name is Corinne. Setting the book in the Louisiana swamp I had to pay tribute to them, their Cajun heritage and special love ❤️

🦝 The magical godfather Drosselmeyer is a raccoon in honor of my own godfather, Randy Ellis. When I was little he used to have a pet raccoon! One of my favorite things about going to his house when I was little was feeding the raccoons that would come to his back door the little butter flower cookies. We’d stack them on our pinky fingers and they would take them off and eat them!

My uncle Randy still calls me on my birthday each and every year and on Mother’s Day too! He’s very witty and loves to joke! You can usually find him running, building something and cheering for the Tigers. I always enjoy spending time with him and I’m so glad he’s my godfather. I had to create my godfather in his honor ❤️

🐿️ I thought I’d share the “why” behind some of the animal character choices in The Nutcracker, a Swanp Tail. Of course, I need to start with my amazing sister in law who created the wonderful new Critter Collection inspired by my book.

I created the squirrel for the Chinese/Tea dance because it’s a fun, lively and quick dance, just like a little squirrel. Once I made that decision, adding a Madeline tribute was easy. We all know how much she loves squirrels! The fans are inspired by the Mimosa logo so it was the perfect fit. I’m so lucky my brother met and married Madeline. She’s fit in with our family from day one and I’m so honored to have been the recipient of her creative genius all these years. I wear her jewelry each and every day and like us all, usually like us all, look like a walking Mimosa commercial. Her style is so unique and her heart is so big for helping others and loving Louisiana. Thank you Madeline ❤️🐿️

I cannot wait until tomorrow for to share the amazing critter collection based off of The Nutcracker, a Swamp Tail! These past few months have been a literal dream come true from when I was a child. Friday I will visit my elementary school and it’s just full circle. I remember when James Rice (The Cajun Night Before Christmas) visited my school and now I’m doing the same thing hoping to inspire other young artists. Pinch me moment for any illustrator!

I’m also happy to say the book is SOLD OUT! The publisher’s warehouse has no more copies until the beginning of 2026! 🎉 So come see my at my next few signings and events or order online while you can! I can’t say thank you enough….now on to create more book! ❤️
