Awakening the Artists

Awakening the Artists Liam and his mom Autumn explore art and share tips to make art more accessible to individuals of all abilities.

You can learn adaptive techniques and support Liam’s craft by purchasing his homemade greeting cards. ✨ I am a mother and caregiver of an amazing 16-year old autistic son, Liam, who loves art and spells to communicate. We are on a mission to provide quality, creative support for neurodivergent individuals and their families. We offer creative ideas, free crafts and share our unique video workshops you can purchase!

I enjoyed creating this black and white doodle today. I didn’t think much or plan anything in advance, just started creating and felt into what should be added next. Stream of consciousness doodling? Yes.

The three triangles either remind me of Christmas trees or sharks 😝.. what do you see?

Have you ever tried doodling without a destination in mind? 😁

Liam and I both made our own versions of square art today! I doodled with alcohol markers using a square template. I simply created whatever came to my mind.

Liam chose metallic acrylic paint colors to use on black and different design paper. We used a square template for sponging and tracing. Liam did his best cutting close to the lines and I cut when exact cutting was needed. Then he pasted the design paper squares whenever he wanted on his dry piece.

I asked Liam what “message” he felt the symbol of a square teaches us and he spelled:

“Squares inspire security. No line is alone. Each line is attached to another.”

I really love that perspective! 🥰

Liam and I were able to share our recent Positive/Negative Abstract Art project with the CommuniKeys community in Colorado for a virtual summit they are hosting next week. We are always willing to teach others simple ways to make art accessible to individuals of all abilities!

I’ll share the video tutorial and tips on this page after its debut presentation! 🙌🏼

Art lends itself to motor challenges that can be creative and purposeful! There is no wrong way to color in an object, so whatever happens, you’ll be encouraging your loved one to practice greater hand/eye control. Liam used horizontal strokes, lifting between each one. 👏🏼

Liam is still making his creative greeting cards as a leisure hobby! He choses from design options, communicates his own preferences and either chooses the phrases or creates them himself. Liam has named his hobby “Heart in Action” and loves to uplift others through kindness+art!

The cards are 4 by 5.5 inches made on sturdy cardstock and come with brown envelopes. Right now he has 10 designs and 60 thank you cards already available. These designs can easily be re-created as thinking of you or birthday cards. We can also custom any order to amount needed!

We can take a few orders a month so please reach out to me over direct message if you would like to place an order and support a young man’s craft! 🤩

✨They are 12 for $25, or 24 for $42 and this includes shipping to anywhere in US or Canada.

Liam and I started a new set of greeting cards today! One set will have a galaxy background and the other drip art and umbrellas.

Liam used sponges to add different shades of regular acrylic paint on black card stock to make galaxy clouds. I helped him use the back of a paint brush to make the stars. He used watered down acrylic pour paint (and gravity’s help!) with droppers on the white. The drip art did not yield perfectly straight lines but that’s okay - art is allowed to surprise us!

Each page looks abstract and unique! We will cut in half so each page creates two meaningful cards! Stay tuned. 😍

We had fun making some Valentine’s Day cards!

Liam rolled marbles in acrylic pour paint to create two dynamic absract designs. We used a glass baking dish but a taller bin may work even better. I did have to trim card stock one inch to fit properly. The marbles did jump out a few times as Liam was learning the exact force needed to roll them.

Marble art is a gross motor art skill most individuals can do. Artists can chose their colors and each design will be unique! 😉

During an online class yesterday Liam expressed he would add “golden hearts and stars to a card to show how a person shines” so of course I jumped right on that! I printed out a star and heart template and Liam sponge-painted them gold. Once dry, I cut the shapes out and he pasted on the cards.

Happy day of LOVE however you enjoy it! 💞

I’m really enjoying a daily personal practice of doodling or painting or a combination like this piece, and interpreting the deeper layers afterwards.

Are you receiving and sharing love easily?

Throughout the month of February, I will be creating a project a day in my own time and space. My intention is to explore my own creativity without any pressure or the need to offer something of service to others. I imagine I may have a handful of ideas, templates or techniques to offer by March yet the goal is to restore a sense of freedom to my personal art practice!

I feel it’s crucial during chaotic external times to nurture our own sense of grounding and peace within… so that will be my focus for February 2026! I asked ChatGPT (which I use sparingly) to create an image that would represent my intention. Grounding through Art is the goal!

I encourage anyone else feeling overwhelmed to pull out a doodle pad or a canvas and paint and allow all emotions to flow. Everything you feel is valid and allowed a voice! Maybe the frequency of color, texture and shape is calling you. It is often our suppressed emotions and fears about xyz that causes our physical dysregulation. So let’s choose to release, recenter, and find strength in who we are!

It does feel supportive to share weekly how I’m doing and feeling throughout this practice. If you are finding art a positive outlet, please let us know. 🥰

Happy creating!
