Laura and I just tried El Bandido Mexican Restaurant across from the Food City on Newport Hwy. Laura truly enjoyed her Carne Asada Torta and could only eat half. I had to try a carnita taco as I can only name two places around town that in my opinion make them like Mexico. I can now name three places as it was very good. The guacamole was very good and I had the nachos special. Come give them a try.

Mist drifted through the Great Smoky Mountains as Park Ranger Brock Cliffhanger led his Jr. Rangers along a quiet ridge. When A’Miyah spotted a sharp‑toed paw print, Brock smiled.

The Lost Red Wolf of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park

On a quiet morning hike through the Smokies, Park Ranger Brock Cliffhanger gathered the Jr. Park Rangers beneath a stand of towering oaks. The forest felt peaceful, but Brock’s voice carried a thoughtful weight as he pointed to the ridgeline.

“Once,” he said, “these mountains echoed with the calls of the red wolf—a shy, intelligent predator that roamed the Southern Appalachians for generations.” The Jr. Rangers leaned in, surprised.

Brock explained how red wolves were eliminated by the mid‑1900s due to predator control efforts and hybridization with coyotes. “Today,” he continued, “no wild red wolves live in the Smokies. Their absence reminds us how every choice we make affects the balance of nature.”

The Jr. Rangers walked on quietly, carrying with them a deeper respect for the wildlife that once shaped these mountains—and the responsibility to protect what remains.

The Limpkin Surprise - The Great Smoky Mountains National Park

While hiking a quiet trail deep in the Great Smoky Mountains, the Jr. Park Rangers suddenly stopped in their tracks.
“Brock… what is that bird?” one whispered.

Perched near the edge of a misty wetland stood a Limpkin — a long‑legged, tropical bird normally found in the marshes of Florida, not the mountains of Tennessee. Its spotted brown feathers glowed softly in the morning light as it probed the mud with its curved bill.

Brock smiled, lowering his voice so they wouldn’t startle it.
“You’re witnessing something incredibly rare,” he explained. “Limpkins almost never wander this far north. Seeing one here in the Smokies is like finding a seashell on a mountaintop. It tells us how amazing and unpredictable nature can be.”

The Jr. Rangers watched in awe as the Limpkin let out its strange, wailing call — a sound none of them would forget.
And Brock reminded them, “Moments like this are why we explore. Nature always has a surprise waiting.”
