Inking up a new display for the tomorrow! If you know me, you know I’m not big on wood type, but gosh is big wood type beautiful inked up solid and doing just what it was made to do—announce a few important words from after. And what’s more important than letters? (“Press” up next—bc “letterpress” is too long to fit on one 12x18” sheet in this very fabulous 45min condensed gothic wood type gifted to us by Susan Johnston. Who, when I tried to pay for it, said “I like the messaging you’re putting out. I want this type used for that kind of work! Please continue.” & continue we do. With immense gratitude.

Rolling into the home stretch with our broadside contest — one week left to submit! We’re looking for poems of any style, that elicit big feeling in few lines (25 lines or less ;) www.expedition.press/contest

Pictured is the flyer we made for brick and more poetry lovin’ spots like , , and Seattle’s own (thank you all for helping spread the word!). To the left is our Heidelberg Windmill printing press, with some of our poetry collection above it. To the right is inventory ready to ship and cut paper ready to be printed. Still getting the hang of our workflows in this new shop space, but it’s sweet to feel it slowly settling in.

Wild we’re halfway through the month already. Been an exciting time watching submissions roll in these past two weeks, can’t wait to dig in to the reading! But there’s still two weeks’ time to polish up any sweet lines you’ve been sitting on and send them out way. Huge thanks to all who have been sharing and submitting to our inaugural contest. Heartening all around.

There is a bird and a stone
in your body. Your job is not
to kill the bird with the stone.

— Victoria Chang ()

From “Love Letters,” The Trees Witness Everything, .

On selecting this text (by Myrna):

There are so many beautiful and useful poems in The Trees Witness Everything that it was quite hard to choose — I read it a few times before landing on these lines for this project. Why did they win out? Simply because they kept running through my head, and each time I wondered and wondered what they meant. They felt so true, and that if I could figure them out, then I’d know something more about myself. Something important. And so I printed them (with permission from Copper Canyon and Victoria!). I love working with words I don’t understand all the way because it means I can learn from them. And gosh I love learning.

If you’re a poet reading this, we’d love to learn from your writing too! Expedition Press is open for submissions until Oct 31 for our broadside contest: www.expedition.press/contest.

“There is a bird and a stone...” these lines by Victoria Chang () in 14pt Kennerly patiently waiting on the stone to be locked up and inked up for a restock. And there are a few more lines of Victoria’s, from the same poem, lined up right behind them!
