What is mastering and why do you need it?

Since mastering is the final step in preparing your mixes for radio and CD duplication, it is extremely important that the process be completed with utmost care. Mastering accomplishes several goals: maximizing the loudness of the track, perfecting the frequency spectrum through the use of EQ and multiband compression, exporting your mix from the DAW in a way that preserves or enhances fidelity, editing the track listing together, and burning the master disk to red book standard at the highest quality possible. Without the proper equipment and knowledge your mixes can be destroyed by the mastering process, ruining your hard work and distorting your creative vision.
