Astronomy on Tap Seattle Astronomy on Tap: because science is better with beer! Presenters are from local research and educational institutions.

Each FREE Astronomy on Tap event features accessible, engaging science presentations on topics ranging from planets to black holes to the beginning of the Universe. Most events have games and prizes to test and reward your new-found knowledge! There is always lots of time to ask questions and interact with the presenters and other scientists who inevitably tag along for the beer.

This month’s Astronomy on Tap Seattle will be on April 22nd at Stoup Brewing - Capitol Hill at 7pm! Stop by to hear some cool science and maybe win prizes in our Astronomy trivia!

This month, we’ll hear from Hurum Maksora Tohfa on the Rubin Observatory’s optics and James Davenport on Apollo 14. We hope to see you there!

Meet this month's speakers!

Speaker: Kelsey Lund

Kelsey Lund is a postdoc being hosted at the Institute for Nuclear Theory at the UW, and her research walks the line between nuclear physics and astrophysics. She completed her PhD working between the coastal plains on the East Coast at North Carolina State University and the high deserts of New Mexico at Los Alamos National Lab. She is interested in the synthesis of the heaviest elements as it occurs in the violent mergers of the remains of long-dead stars.

Speaker: Alex Riley

Alex makes a living comparing simulated galaxies to our Milky Way. In his free time he likes to read, cook vegan meals, and watch Dropout. He lives in Malmö with his wife and cat.

Meet one of our Speakers!

Ryder Strauss is a Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of Washington. He earned his Ph.D. at Northern Arizona University, where he began working on large-scale astronomical surveys. His primary research interest is the discovery and characterization of small solar system bodies with a variety of novel ground-based techniques.

September 24th Bickersons Brewhouse - Ballard

Meet one of our Speakers!

Dr. Ian Sullivan is a Research Scientist at the University of Washington, where he develops advanced imaging algorithms for both optical and radio telescopes. Trained as an experimental astrophysicist launching sounding rockets with NASA, he now works at the intersection of astronomy and data science, designing instruments and technologies that push the frontiers of discovery. He is the technical lead of the Alert Production team for the Vera Rubin Observatory (rubinobservatory.org), which will provide real-time detection of asteroids, comets, supernovae and everything that changes in the night sky.
