While Nintendo was struggling financially and falling behind on rent, Segale visited their warehouse to demand payment from the president, Minoru Arakawa.

Rather than evicting them, Segale accepted Arakawa's promise to pay soon and left.

Following this encounter, the development team decided to rename the character, who was previously known simply as "Jumpman," to "Mario."

In 2015, Super Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto officially confirmed that the character was named after Segale.

The new Super Mario movie is in theaters, but did you know everyone’s favorite plumber is from Tukwila? In the 1980’s, Nintendo America was headquartered in Tukwila. Mario himself was named after their landlord, Mario Segal.

We’re still trying to figure out who inspired Bowser. Come see it at Westfield Southcenter here in the city where it all began.

It’s Community Garden Week, and we’re spotlighting Namaste Community Garden. The story of this garden is one of hope and healing, where refugee gardeners from Bhutan and beyond reclaimed a piece of what they lost — tending plots, sharing harvests, and passing down knowledge rooted in generations of farming.
