On this day 178 years ago, Susie King Taylor was born into slavery in coastal Georgia. She became the first African American nurse during the Civil War, the first black woman to publish a memoir, and an educator of the formerly enslaved, founding several schools in Savannah.

“What a Wonderful Revolution,” a new play about her life, can be seen August 6th, 7th and 8th at 40 Acres and a Mule Playhouse.

“The Making of Taylor Square” is a short documentary about the campaign to rename Calhoun Square in honor of Susie King Taylor. Hindsight Film Festival hosted a special screening last year, followed by a performance from reenactor Rosalyn Rouse and a panel discussion with the filmmakers and subjects of the film - Patt Gunn DOC Savannah. 45 years ago today, Johnny Mize was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. The new documentary "Stalking the 'Big Cat' of Georgia" takes a fresh look at Mize's legacy. Inspired by the book written by North Georgia author Jerry Grillo, the film uncovers the highs and lows of Mize's career, as well as the discovery that during the off-season he played against some of the best players in the Negro Leagues. Mize's recognition in the Hall of Fame stands in contrast to James "Red" Moore, another first baseman from Georgia in the same era, who famously played for the Atlanta Black Crackers, but was never given the chance to join the Major League.

The Blues Society is a re-evaluation of the 1960s seen through the lens of the Memphis Country Blues Festival (1966-1969). The film encourages viewers to ask questions about race, music, and American culture and to reconsider their preconceptions about Blues music and Blues history. "Our Mr. Matsura" is a feature documentary about photographer Frank Matsura, who journeyed from his native Japan to live in rural Washington State in the early 1900s. Director Beth Harrington and Cinematographer Scott Ballard were interviewed by Savannah-based cinematographer Evan Griffith about their process of uncovering the trail of photos Matsura left behind and capturing his expansive legacy on film. Happy 80th birthday to Barbara Kopple! The two-time Oscar-winning director joined us during the festival to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award and to attend the first 50th Anniversary screening of "Harland County, USA". The film is a classic American documentary that follows a combative miners strike in Eastern Kentucky. Barbara began filming the mine workers in her early 20's, at first on her own and then with a small crew for several years. The film went on to win the 1976 Academy Award for Best Documentary and it is still widely studied in film schools today. After our screening in Savannah, Barbara answered questions from the audience and had a discussion with George Dawes Green, a celebrated award-winning author and founder of The Moth on NPR
