Today, June 13th, is International Albinism Awareness Day! For those of you who don’t know, I was born with a genetic condition called Albinism.
What is Albinism? Albinism causes the lack of pigmentation in the hair, skin, and eyes.
The eyes need pigment in them to function properly. Since I lack that pigment, I was also born blind. I say blind as I aim to break the stereotype that if you are blind, you have zero vision. Every person with Albinism has varying degrees of blindness and eye conditions, it is a huge spectrum!
For a while now, I have been working on my very first children’s book. I knew this children’s book would have protagonists with Albinism. This past spring quarter I took a book illustration and had a blast! It was truly my favorite class! For ten weeks I poured so much love, dedication, and passion into my debut book. I am still working on it, but in honor of Albinism Awareness Day, I wanted to share with you my favorite fully illustrated page from my book! This page shows our two protagonists meeting for the first time. The hair of someone with Albinism is very noticeable. It is why many of us get stares from people while out in public! When sketching this page, one of my classmates pointed out that the circles around the girls resembled a heart, I was encouraged to keep that shape as it emphasized the happiness depicted.
Happy International Albinism Awareness Day!
