Today, June 13th, is International Albinism Awareness Day! For those of you who don’t know, I was born with a genetic condition called Albinism.
What is Albinism? Albinism causes the lack of pigmentation in the hair, skin, and eyes.
The eyes need pigment in them to function properly. Since I lack that pigment, I was also born blind. I say blind as I aim to break the stereotype that if you are blind, you have zero vision. Every person with Albinism has varying degrees of blindness and eye conditions, it is a huge spectrum!

For a while now, I have been working on my very first children’s book. I knew this children’s book would have protagonists with Albinism. This past spring quarter I took a book illustration and had a blast! It was truly my favorite class! For ten weeks I poured so much love, dedication, and passion into my debut book. I am still working on it, but in honor of Albinism Awareness Day, I wanted to share with you my favorite fully illustrated page from my book! This page shows our two protagonists meeting for the first time. The hair of someone with Albinism is very noticeable. It is why many of us get stares from people while out in public! When sketching this page, one of my classmates pointed out that the circles around the girls resembled a heart, I was encouraged to keep that shape as it emphasized the happiness depicted.

Happy International Albinism Awareness Day!

Very excited to share this revised illustration for my Illustration 383: Book Illustration class pre-quarter assignment this quarter. This class will be a lot of work, but will allow me to produce a book dummy for my children’s book! What’s a book dummy? It’s like a proof of concept. It shows the story, the page layout, what the pages will look like, and it will showcase the finalized book cover. Very excited to dive into this course!

It’s been a bit since I shared book related art. For my animation business class this quarter, we were instructed to create a business card, a resume, and a cover letter that had consistent personal branding. For my business card, I knew I wanted to have an illustration. I knew that it would have the pastel yellow and blue color scheme. I also knew that I wanted the illustration to be related to my book characters as they demonstrate who I am and what I strive to be as an artist.

Over 15 hours of working on this, I discovered that this will be the style the book will be illustrated in, this is locked in! Later the colors of the outfits and props will change to match what they will be in the book, but for the assignment I wanted a limited color palette to match the front side of my business card. Enjoy my illustration!

I am very excited to have a final design of the doll that will be a key part of my children’s book! In my book, the protagonist is a doll maker and she made this doll to enter into a contest in hopes her idea would be picked up. Little does she know, her doll would be the light of a little girl’s world. Stay tuned!

My main challenge with making her was she needed to be appealing, her colors needed to look well against her skin and hair, and she could not resemble an existing Disney princess at all. I tried light pink tulle on top of pink dress but that clashed with her skin. Then I tried yellow tulle on blue and blue tulle on blue and it looked too similar to Cinderella. Then I tried pink tulle on blue and blue tulle on pink, looked too similar to Aurora. Then I tried yellow on purple…. then it looked like Rapunzel. THEN! I tried yellow on teal and it did not look like an existing Disney princess! I didn’t want her dress to be all yellow because I did not want her to look entirely like me. I wanted her look to be original with accents of my favorite color. After all the color testing I am very happy with her final look. My next task with the doll is to do a turnaround (a lineup of the doll at different angles to show how she looks in a 360 view) for when I eventually have the doll made.

This illustration took a few days to create, but was very worth it in the end!

I was asked to create a Where’s Waldo like illustration hiding 10 cans of anchovies to commemorate a cute Christmas tradition that’s lasted for years where a can of anchovies were hidden in Christmas gifts. This was the first time I’ve done something like this, and was very fun to do! Can you find all 10 cans of anchovies? 👀

Happy Holidays everyone! Enjoy this time with family and friends!

I am so excited to be really thinking about my book and the story for it! I knew from the start that a handmade doll would be a big part. This isn’t an ordinary doll though, this doll looks like the protagonist in the sense that it resembles Albinism features. This doll (and a special little girl with Albinism) becomes the pivotal moment where the protagonist understands that her need is different from her want.

I finally sketched out what the doll would look like and decided it would be a ragdoll. I researched how ragdolls were made since this was the perfect type of doll to be handmade! Of course things are bound to change when I finalize more things and I begin to illustrate the pages, but for now, enjoy the sketch!

So excited to draft the story itself and edit it to make it meaningful in the end! Please follow along with me on this journey!

Here is early ideation of my secondary character, Kienna! Kienna’s shape language is more circular like forms. Circles in storytelling can mean the character is playful, innocent, bubbly, bouncy. I wanted Kienna to also have aspects of square forms to reflect the shape language of the protagonist, Ellie.
Within the story, Ellie unintentionally inspires Kienna and becomes a sort of mentor to the young girl. More to come!

Yesterday I downloaded Procreate for the first time and explored the different brushes and the layout of the app. I made this doodle to practice with shape language and get myself accustomed to drawing on an iPad!

I am very excited to have this tool as I am now able to take my work on-the-go, I can draw more observational sketches, work in other locations besides my dorm or bedroom, and it will allow me to present my work more efficiently during events like Career Fair at SCAD or Lightbox. Hope you enjoy my first Procreate doodle!

Here is early ideation of my protagonist, Ellie! I wanted Ellie’s shape language to have more square like forms. Squares in storytelling can mean the character is reliable, strong, a leader. I wanted Ellie to also have aspects of circular forms as well to reflect the shape language of our secondary character, stay tuned!
