📸 Happy World Photography Day! 📸
Today, August 19, we celebrate the art of photography—and the remarkable way a single image can transport us through time and place.
The story begins in 19th-century France. In 1837, Joseph Nicéphore Niépce and Louis Daguerre perfected the daguerreotype, capturing images on polished, silver-plated copper sheets. On August 19, 1839, the French government acquired the patent rights and chose to make the invention a gift to the world. More than 170 years later, World Photography Day was launched as a global celebration in 2010.
Closer to home, during the 2026 Saugerties Artists Studio Tour, we had the pleasure of visiting with photographer Ed Lederman, whose work feels like a love letter to New York.
A lifelong observer and documentarian of the city and the Hudson Valley, Ed’s immense panoramic photographs are nothing short of immersive. They invite you to step inside the landscape—to experience the sweeping skies, architecture, streets and communities that make New York so extraordinary.
His current projects include “Clouds of Ulster County,” a Saugerties Village panoramic, and a fascinating collaboration featuring Ed’s Coney Island photographs on metal plates, enhanced with painting by artist and partner Lauren Bergman.
Ed has also established himself as one of New York City’s leading architectural photographers. His photographs have appeared in Time Magazine, The New York Times and Taschen, and he served as the lead photographer documenting the construction and completion of the Whitney Museum from 2010–2016. His extensive portfolio also includes the New York City Marathon and hundreds of New York City building and development projects.

Today, we celebrate photographers like Ed Lederman who remind us that photography isn't simply about capturing what we see—it’s about preserving a sense of place, time and feeling.
