Created in the early 2010's 'What's Up Sarasota' is all about local people, places & events. It's from my perspective. Full of my love and decades of knowledge of Sarasota. My first weekly video was in 2012 with 'This Weekend in Sarasota w/Kirsten' on This Week in Sarasota (TWiS) to 'What’s Up' on Sarasota Day to 'What's Up Sarasota'- all while hosting 'Out & About with Kirsten' while co-hosting '

The Nilon Report' on WSRQ 106.9 fm all while hosting popular weekly game nights at places all over Sarasota. I have put alot of love and hard work into supporting and helping my community grow. My shoutouts & mentions come from the heart, as a way for natives, semi-natives, snowbirds, locals, visitors, friends, lovers & family to hear "what's up" every week, from someone who knows this area well. I have lived all over the United States. I know what I like and what I want for my community. I'm passionate about arts, entertainment and education. So I created these vlogs as a way to enrich my community and to see my reflections of love when I look at my hometown. These people and places are special to me. Every like, view, share and comment is appreciated, it helps amplify these good stories. I truly appreciate that. Thank you for watching, supporting locals and being a part of what’s up! THANK YOU for your time and attention xox ~host Kirsten Sponseller

A little “STEM” research 😉:
In celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, the U.S. Botanic Garden is blooming with the flowers each U.S. state and territory has chosen as their official flower.

Each state flower is listed

The August full moon, the Sturgeon Moon, 🌕 coincides with a deep partial lunar eclipse visible across the Americas and parts of Europe and Africa.

space.com

Key Details and Events
* Peak Time: August 28, 2026, at 12:18 a.m. ET (9:18 p.m. PT on August 27).
* Lunar Eclipse: A partial lunar eclipse begins on the night of August 27 at 9:23 p.m. ET, reaching its maximum coverage near midnight (12:12 a.m. ET on August 28).
* Visibility: Entirely visible across North and South America, as well as parts of Europe and Africa.
* Traditional Name: Named the Sturgeon Moon because large lake sturgeon in North American lakes were most easily caught during this time of year.

What’s a Sturgeon?🐟
These prehistoric-looking fish have been traced back to around 136 million years ago, and many people call them “living fossils.”
* Females require around 20 years to start reproducing, and they can reproduce only every 4 years. However, they can live up to 150 years!
* Today, there are about 29 species worldwide, including the lake sturgeon found in the Great Lakes. They have evolved in size from the size of a bass to a monster sturgeon as big as a Volkswagen.
* The lake sturgeon is quite rare today, due to intense overfishing in the 19th century, pollution, and damage to their habitat.

The Sturgeon Full Moon
🌕 🐟
“Stargazers in the U.S. will see the Sturgeon Moon rise over the eastern horizon at sunset on Aug. 27. You may notice the moon adopt a yellow-orange hue in the hour following moonrise, as the blue wavelengths of its light are scattered by Earth's atmosphere by an effect called Rayleigh scattering.”

July 2026 Full Buck Moon:
Meaning, Peak Time, and July Moon Traditions & Info from the The Old Farmers

Look 🆙 🙃

🌕🦌July’s Full Buck Moon will rise on Wednesday, July 29, reaching peak illumination at 10:36 A.M. Eastern Time.

“It will be below the horizon at that time, so plan to look towards the southeast after sunset to watch it rise into the sky.”

Why is it called the Buck Moon?

“The Full Moon in July is called the Buck Moon because the antlers of male deer (bucks) are in full-growth mode at this time. Bucks shed and regrow their antlers each year, producing a larger and more impressive set as the years go by.“

👉”The Full Moon names used by The Old Farmer’s Almanac come from a number of places, including Native American, colonial American, and European sources. Traditionally, each Full Moon name was applied to the entire lunar month in which it occurred, not solely to the full Moon.”👈

Thank You, to the Old Famers Almanac
⏳⌛️

* Peak Time: 10:36 a.m. EDT (too early to see, as it is below the horizon)
* Best Time to Watch: Wednesday evening, July 29, during dusk and just after sunset as it rises in the southeast
* Appearance: Looks large, full, and golden to the naked eye the night before, the night of, and the night after.
