To everyone debating this: This is not opinion. It is hydrology.
In case you never learned the basics of the evaporation cycle in grade school, take notes📝
ALL of Florida is a low, porous, water-driven ecosystem. Think of it as a giant living French drain: wetlands spread and store rainfall, soils allow water to infiltrate, some of that water recharges aquifers, and vegetation returns moisture to the atmosphere through evapotranspiration. 🌦️
When wetlands are drained and replaced with rooftops, roads, and parking lots, rainfall can no longer follow those natural pathways. It becomes toxic, polluted runoff carrying fertilizer, oil, sediment, and other contaminants into our creeks, rivers, bays, and Gulf.
The result is less natural water storage, more flooding, declining water quality, altered estuary salinity, stressed fisheries and wildlife, and less protection during drought.
Development does not cause every drought, , flood, or algae bloom but dismantling Florida’s natural water system makes every one of them more damaging.
Florida is not being destroyed by one project. It is being dismantled acre by acre by people who treat a vital connected ecosystem like vacant land.
You cannot pour concrete into your houses plumbing and expect the house to still run the water.
Just as we cannot continue to allow our elected civil servants and these corrupt mega developers to concrete over our protected wetlands and think that Florida will stay alive. 🚱🪦
