Here are my 3 new paintings created for the Toby's Gallery spring show. Info about the show at the final slide of the carousel. I painted these in gouache, which I'm really enjoying even more these days. I don't know if it's because the medium lends itself to a lot of detail, or if I was already heading this way in my work, but my work is going toward more precision, more things spelled out in an accurate manner. Gouache lends itself to that type of painting more than oil, I would say. That being said, I'm certainly not putting my oils in storage or anything, don't worry.

I'm so glad spring is here! The weather got hot a little too quickly too early, but besides that what's not to love?? The weather is better, the flowers are blooming, and the days are longer. Feeling the itch to go out and paint more, but for now I'm happy with my camera outings. I look forward to sharing more with you all!

Christopher Queen Gallery's next show opens this Sunday! Here are the paintings I finished for it. The theme for it was obviously spring time, so that meant I had tons of opportunity to go colorful!

I typically restrain my color to a certain degree, but I always love when I have a naturally colorful palette to work with due to the reference.

If interested in checking these paintings out in person, the info is as follows:

Where: Christopher Queen Galleries, Duncans Mills CA (if you’ve never been to Duncans Mills, it’s the biggest building in a very small town. You can’t miss it)

When: Sunday March 8th, 1-3 pm (ish) The gallery is open normal hours so don’t worry about getting there during that window

Show continues for the next two months.

I'll be sharing more about each individual piece over the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned!

"Gold Along The Path" 7x12 inches. Gouache on paper mounted to board.

Though there is that inherent whimsical quality that gouache has that makes it feel like an imaginary scene, this is based on a real place. Last year thanks to social media, Vanessa and I discovered Moore Creek Park in Napa county for the first time. There were endless flourishes of poppies and other flowers carpeting the hillsides. It was a wonderful hike that felt like it got more beautiful the further and further you went along the trail. Tons and tons of poppies the whole time. We can't wait to go back this year!

For the upcoming spring show at Christopher Queen Galleries in Duncans Mills, CA. Opening next month!

"Seaside Solitude At Stornetta" 16x16 inches, Oil on linen.

This lone tree has stood watch over the coast longer than any of us. Rooted in stone, it endures the winds and the passage of years. It serves as a quiet reminder of resilience.

As I close this series of coastal paintings, this painting feels like the right note to end on. Like a tree that's witnessed countless tides, I hope these works have offered you a moment to pause, reflect, and feel the rhythm of the Sonoma/Mendocino coastline in your own way.

Looking back over this series, what moment or feeling has stayed with you the most? I’d love to hear your reflections.

Today is the final day to see this collection of works titled "Radiant Seascapes" at the Gualala Arts Center until November 16th. Vanessa and I would be honored if you experienced them in person before the show closes this evening.

"Salted Wood" 6x8 inches, Gouache on watercolor paper mounted to board.

I always love exploring remnants of the people who once called this little patch of land on the top of a cliff home. I put myself in their shoes and think about what sights they saw, how many waves they witnessed, all the changes in the ocean they must have lived through in the same spot I was standing.

Imagine you were the one who once called this cliffside home. What daily ritual would you have cherished the most?

This piece, along with the others in the series, is on view at the Gualala Arts Center through the weekend (November 16th). We'd be honored if you went to experience them in person before the show closes.

"Point Arena Lighthouse" 18x24 inches. Oil on linen.

The lighthouse has always been a symbol of guidance, but here it also feels like a witness, quietly watching over 150 years of tides and storms. When you think of a lighthouse, do you see it more as a guide, or a quiet keeper of time?

Currently showing at the Gualala Arts Center until November 16th.

"Strata And Churn" 8x12 inches. Oil on linen mounted to board.

At the reception, this is the piece that got the most attention and kudos. At the time I was a bit surprised, because as an artist creating the pieces, it’s hard to be objective about them. But stepping away and returning to it, I can see why. It is the Pacific coast at its most dramatic: fiery cliffs against restless water.

If you could give this scene a soundtrack, what song would you choose? I'd love to hear!

On view at the Gualala Arts Center through November 16th.

"Arena Tide" 8x10 inches, Oil on linen mounted to board.

This painting evokes a memory of stepping around the tides in search of hidden treasures, those treasures being as simple as a jewel-like shell or rock. The feeling of discovery is surprisingly satisfying.

What’s a small discovery in nature that has stayed with you long after you found it?

See it at the Gualala Arts Center before November 16th.

"Eroding Strength" 8x12 inches. Oil on linen mounted to board.

I love how the light carves the cliffs into sculpture.

What feeling does this play of light and shadow stir in you? Does it feel more like a portrait of strength or of impermanence to you? I’d love to hear your take.

On view at the Gualala Arts Center until November 16th.

"Flight Above The Fault" 12x20 inches, Oil on linen board.

There’s a rhythm to the waves here: crash, retreat, breathe, over and over again. The birds know where to go, as if they are on a mission that only they have been briefed on.

If you could follow these birds on their journey, where do you imagine they’d take you?

Currently showing at the Gualala Arts Center through November 16th.

"Above The Gentle Waves" 24x18 inches, Oil on linen board

Though the Mendocino cliffs are usually under a veil of fog-laden gray, catch them at the right time of day and they will glow for you. That fleeting warmth against the contrasting colors of the water underneath is what inspires me to capture them in paint.

If you were standing here, what would strike you first: the glow of the cliffs, the crispness of the air, or the sound of the waves?

See this piece in person at the Gualala Arts Center before November 16th.

“Arena Cove Panorama” 9x24 inches. Oil on linen.

In this painting, I wanted to capture that contrast of jagged rocky crumbling cliffs versus the calm waters of the cove. A conversation between strength and stillness.

Speaking of conversation, does this piece speak more about the resilience of the cliffs or the peace of the cove for you? What side of the coin do you relate with more? Share your reflection below! I’d love to hear what it stirs in you.

If you’d like to experience this piece in person, along with others from our show "Radiant Seascapes", the exhibition is currently on view at the Gualala Arts Center. The show runs through November 16th. I’d love for you to see the work before it closes! 🙂
