Four women in positions of power discuss the hardships and triumphs of working in politics, academia, business, and entrepreneurship.

After being shunned from the workforce for years, women were finally allowed greater access during World War II. However, as quickly as they entered the workforce, they were soon pushed back out when men came back from the war. In the dawn of the 21st Century, women are found throughout every industry but rarely in higher-level positions. Now, there is not just a push to have more women in the workforce; there is a push for women to take powerful positions.

The best way to inspire the next generation to rise to the occasion is to show them the pioneers leading the way to a more inclusive future.

Though there do exist challenges faced by a majority of immigrants, the immigrant experience isn’t miserable but accompanied by lively and joyful moments. Rooted in the subversive tradition of Mexicanidad, “Palmas” confronts viewers with the haunting histories of the Kizh-Gabrieleño tribe, the displacements of Palo Verde, La Loma, and Bishop at Dodger Stadium, and the Palm Tree, presenting a triptych experience of Los Angeles rarely seen.

Director Biography - Aric Lopez

Aric Lopez is an award-winning filmmaker from Southern California. His documentary Palmas, now expanding into a feature-length film, was one of six projects fully funded by USC’s School of Cinematic Arts in 2024. The film earned the “Collegiate Filmmaker Spotlight Award” at the Burbank International Film Festival and the “Best Student Documentary Film” at the Glendale International Film Festival. His films have screened at the American Cinematheque, CAFILM Environmental Youth Forum, American Documentary and Animation Film Festival, San Diego Latino Film Festival, and the Phoenix Film Festival. Grounded in community-based collaboration, Aric’s work blends the cultural divides of his Mexican-American heritage with contemporary storytelling. He was a George Lucas Scholar at USC where he earned his MFA in Film Production after studying screenwriting at CSUN as an Abraham L. Polonsky scholar.

FILM SYNOPSIS: In the music industry, people don’t usually start a career as an artist in their fifties. Into the Unknown is a feature documentary about musician/producer David Franz, who shares his origin story, the struggles of building a music career later in life, and a message of inspiration for anyone ready to write their own next chapter.

In 2020, at the start of the pandemic and just after calling off an engagement, Franz set an audacious goal: record ten albums in ten years, and finally commit to a lifelong dream he’d long buried - becoming a successful performer.
Franz’s longtime friend and collaborator, Jeff Uzzel, makes his feature film debut with Into the Unknown, which began as a short documentary about the making of one album and grew into the story of a life-altering journey. Beyond interviews with several contributors and a final audio mix by Jason Mariani at Carbonite Sound in Ojai, CA, the film is a two-man production: Uzzel filmed, edited, and color corrected it, while Franz produced and pitched in behind the camera between his own on-screen appearances.

Most documentaries tell the story of people who’ve already made it. This is not that. This film captures the beginning of a journey aimed at changing what’s considered possible. It’s a true story about following your inner voice and stepping into the unknown.
