When the Winter Olympics came to Salt Lake City in 2002, one of the most popular attractions for people from all over the world was the exhibit on Native American cultures and lifestyles. The organizers of the Olympics made a special effort to highlight the tribes of Utah and the Southwest.

One of their efforts was to work with John Nieto, an amazing artist of Navajo, Mescalero Apache and Hispanic background to commission a wonderful set of Serigraphs that highlighted Nieto’s bold use of primary colors. It was called the “Olympic Power” Suite that included three images highlighting the athletic performances of the event.

Kevin Red Star (b. 1943) is an Apsáalooke (Crow) painter whose richly detailed, ceremonially vibrant canvases have established him as one of the foremost chroniclers and ambassadors of Crow culture in the history of contemporary Native American art.

Furlow spoke with color. His paintings are built from strong, chromatically fragmented combinations that make his expressionist compositions of Native American themes vibrate with feeling. His figurative works are not portraits of individuals but statements about the human condition, images that use the particular to reach for the universal. The brightness and energy of his palette are not ornamental but expressive, the visual equivalent of the emotional and cultural urgency that drove his practice.

Nieto's paintings are immediately recognizable for their intensity. Working primarily in acrylics, he applied color with a raw, intuitive energy, favoring saturated primaries and bold, simplified forms that give his figures a graphic, almost totemic presence. His subjects, Indigenous warriors, ceremonial dancers, portraits of Native American men and women, and the animals of the American West, are rendered not as documentary records but as enduring symbols of a cultural heritage he felt a deep personal responsibility to honor and preserve.

Art has deep roots in Santa Fe, dating back to the Indigenous peoples of the Southwest—the Pueblo, Navajo, Ute, and Apache—who created art forms like micaceous pottery, woven textiles, baskets, and jewelry, all with practical uses in daily life. These creations were initially made for sustenance rather than as “art.” It wasn’t until the introduction of the railroad, which brought visitors to Santa Fe, that these objects began to be recognized as art. Indigenous people traveled to Santa Fe to showcase their works to travelers, turning the city into a hub for cultural exchange and commerce.

Over time, Santa Fe evolved into the vibrant art destination it is today, famously hosting the annual Santa Fe Indian Market, which continues the tradition of Indigenous artists sharing their culture with the world.
