Day 138: Zion Sunset

Simple shapes. Bold color. Sometimes the cliffs of Zion don’t need detail to speak. A few strokes of pastel and the sandstone still glows with the memory of sunset.

Day 137: Hiking Merit Badge
Date: 2022-1-14

I painted this the day my sons finished a 23-mile loop behind the Tetons to earn their hiking merit badge.

The backside of the Tetons feels different. Wilder. Quieter. Earned.

I liked this painting the day I finished it.
Years later, I still do.

Day 136: Carlsbad Caverns
Date: 2022-1-13

Carlsbad Caverns is not just a place. It feels like stepping into another world.

When I stood in those chambers, the rock seemed almost alive. The formations glowed under the cavern lights like molten stone frozen in time. I tried to capture that feeling rather than the literal shapes. The arches, the flowing forms, the strange warmth against the darkness.

This is the only cave painting in my Lumo series so far. An attempt to capture the quiet, otherworldly mystery beneath the earth.

Day 135: Yoesmite Falls
Date: 2022-1-12

One of my early works using Pentel pastels. It is more impressionistic than accurate, but it still gives you the feel of Yosemite Falls. I was chasing the sense of height, the pull of the water, and that quiet power you only notice when you stop and look long enough.

Morro Bay from behind the rock.

I painted this around the same time as my last piece. I never loved this one. It feels rough. Unpolished.

But sometimes that is closer to the truth.

Day 133: Arizona

Not every painting is a masterpiece. Some are just moments.
This one was about color more than detail. The blues felt right. The greens felt calm. That was enough.

Day 132: Morro Bay

I wanted this one to feel real, but at this size you can’t chase every detail. So I focused on the structure — the layers of green hills, the clustered town, the sandbar, and Morro Rock holding everything in place.

After a 14-hour drive home from California, I needed to make something. No plan. No perfection. Just movement.

I sat down and let soft pastels take over, not my usual medium, just instinct.

Sometimes art is simply a way to come back to yourself.
