Join us Sunday, September 13th from 2pm–4pm for the Rooted In What Carries Us opening reception!

Rooted In What Carries Us is a major group exhibition featuring Native and Indigenous perspectives from Southern California and beyond, depicting the original peoples of this land as multidimensional individuals, each with unique traditions and stories that comprise the multifaceted identity of Turtle Island. Painting, drawing, fiber, ceramics, basket weaving, beadwork, and photography, are represented by thirty-nine contemporary Native and Indigenous artists working today.

Rooted In What Carries Us will be open from September 12th–October 24th, with a public opening reception Sunday, September 13th from 2–4pm.

Katie E. Stubblefield & Jennifer Gunlock, (She Will) Live Through This, 2026. Wedding dress, pearls, paint, lace, projection

A video by is projected onto a sculptural installation by . Inspired by mollusks, which naturally produce pearls as an immune response to foreign irritants as an organic act of self-preservation, this installation reimagines a future in which a feminist Mother Nature sews, staples, and animates the shells, skins, and debris of marine organisms to create a hybrid filtration system.

This fictional medical scan by reveals an imagined slice of the Port from the water’s surface to the floor. Incorporating photography and video shot around the Port of LA and Cabrillo Beach—including a close-up of the SS Lane Victory bobbing along the water’s edge—this video challenges us to consider what permanent marks of industry are hidden in the depths below, as they continually leach toxins into the water, long after their disuse.

Kaya & Blank, Intermodal, 2025. Gold-toned salted paper print made with water from the Port of Los Angeles in artist frame

In their series of photographs, .blank use seawater collected directly from the ports in a saltwater and silver nitrate process developed in the nineteenth century. While their video piece offers a close-up view of operations within the ports and the intermodal freight system, their photographs shift perspective, depicting industrial marine traffic suspended on the horizon of seemingly tranquil seascapes. This contrast reveals both the immense scale and the often-overlooked presence of global shipping networks in everyday life.
