Join Chopsticks Alley Art and ICA San Josรฉ for a very special guided meditation within our gallery onย Saturday, June 18th at 11am.ย Participants will be led in a relaxing, 1-hour program including a special flute performance, a short introduction on Asian perspectives on community connection, and a group meditation.

In most Asian cultures, collectivism comes naturally. In collectivistic cultures, individuals are seen as embedded within their group identity, and the notion of a separate, autonomous self is deemphasized and discouraged. In this discussion, we will explore ideas on how we could embody these cultural ways to make a positive impact for our community. We will provide mats, but feel free to bring your own. Chairs will be provided as needed.
RSVP link in bio! Walk ins welcome.

Featuring:

Thi Cแบงm, Vietnamese Poet, Flutist

Trami Cron, Author, Exec Artistic Director of Chopsticks Alley Art

Smita Garg, EdD, Arts Educator, Kinder Way Healing

Incarcerated for six years, Jesse Krimes creates artwork that frequently addresses the personal, communal, and national levels of mass incarceration and how media and online representations of individual and group identities undergird societal structures related to punishment and confinement.

Theย ๐˜Œ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜จ๐˜บ ๐˜˜๐˜ถ๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ต๐˜ดย were constructed using fragments of personal clothing, textiles, and other ephemera collected from currently and formerly incarcerated people. Today, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His bravery and dedication to fighting racial injustice paved the way for landmark legislation, such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

As we continue to strive for equality and justice in this day and age, let us remember Dr. Kingโ€™s words: โ€œInjustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.โ€

#throwback to the sets I created for a site-specific video installation produced for Institute of Institute of Contemporary Art San Jose I constructed two different scale models of the ICA San Josรฉ lobby and documented the process as the model rooms underwent dramatic transformations, including flooding and crystals growing up the walls. In 2013, I projected one of the time-lapse videos, at a large scale, back onto the ICA gallery walls for the โ€œParallax Viewsโ€ exhibition. โ€‹The shifts in scale rendered the scene otherworldly and disorienting. (Full disclosure- the first pic isnโ€™t exactly what the projection looked like in realityโ€ฆ it is how I would have liked it to look, but it wasnโ€™t quite possible given our resources at the time. It was a learning experience for sure! It still looked awesome, but this is how I like to remember it.) The Parallax Views show was the brainchild of Kathryn Dunlevie / @kathryndunlevie, which I helped organize. We worked on that for years, and then beautifully, Donna Napper / @donnaenadnapper, Cathy Krayer Kimball / @cathykkimball, and the ICA SJ brought it to reality. Four years later, in 2017, the set itself was shown in the โ€œDetritiusโ€ show at the ICA SJ. That was such an amazing show to participate in, guest curated by Kevin B. Chen / @kevin_b_chen, Lisa Ellsworth and Lordy Rodriguez / @lordyrodriguez. #SanJoseICA #ICASanJose #ArtProcess #Set #SetConstruction #Blue #Green #Chromotography #BayAreaArtist #SanFranciscoArtist #PhotographyStudio #ContemporaryPhotography #ArtistLife #BayArea #SFArtist #CloseUp #Crystals #ScienceExperiment #ArtAndScience #GrowingCrystals #Aesthetic #Series #GroundWaters #MonoammoniumPhosphate #LizHickok #LizHickokArt Liz Hickok Art #1890BryantStudios 1890 Bryant Street Studios #detritus #parallax #ParallaxViews #TimeLapseVideo
The Institute of Contemporary Art San Jose announces James G. Leventhal as the new Executive Director. Leventhal will begin his new role on January 17, 2022. โ€œJamesโ€™ arrival times perfectly with our current needs,โ€ says Board President Gordon Yamate. โ€œThe ICA is coming off a year of growth and change, and we need to focus strategically to build upon this momentum. The Board sought an Executive Director with vision, experience, and a strong desire to serve various communities within San Josรฉ and the Greater Bay Area, including collaboration with various local cultural organizations. I look forward to seeing all that the ICA can accomplish under Jamesโ€™ leadership.โ€ Leventhal sees incredible potential for the ICA as an incubator for new art and ideas. He believes the ICA can serve as a destination for inspiration and a laboratory of experience: a space for civic dialog and actionโ€“both onsite and online, to engage new and existing audiences in the San Josรฉ area and beyond. We're excited to see what's next for the ICA! Following current COVID protocols, the ICA is open Thursday-Sunday, 12-5pm. For more information www.icasanjose.org/visit/.

What parts of yourself or your life would you want to express through art? Quest students explored these ideas during our San Jose Museum Hopping Field Trip. Check out the photos below!
