🍑🏭 Before Silicon Valley had chips, it had fruit.

By 1939, San Jose was the world's largest canning and dried-fruit packing center, with 18 canneries and 13 dried-fruit packing houses. The surrounding Santa Clara Valley was covered in orchards producing prunes, apricots, cherries, pears and other crops.

Within a few generations, much of that agricultural landscape would disappear beneath one of the world's great technology centers.
