As for my family of 2 furry kids, my husband and I, we love to have more outdoors time! The backyard becomes our favorite place to be at! When I was a kid, I started growing and caring fir this beautiful bright yellow and orange flowers in some pots we used to have in our patio. Without knowing the name or what kind they were, I only called them: “My Beautiful Yellow Orangish Flowers”. It was until years later, I learned that What I was growing were Calendulas!☺️

They are gorgeous and known for “The Perfect Flower Companions”, in gardens, beds, pots, etc.

They are so easy to grow, but the key to succeed while growing this beautiful flowers is:

1. A well drained soil
2. And occasional watering.

A very Inter if fact I learned about Calendulas, is the way it was used in Europe in past centuries, it’s yellow petals were used as yellow coloring in cheeses and butters.

Now it is also used for medicinal, and culinary purposes. Maybe you’ve heard of calendula soaps, bath salts and even tea!

There are so many Calendula Varieties, but my favorite will always be: Pacific Beauty Calendula. By the way, I have a whole collection of these gorgeous flowers in my handmade cards. Polka Dahlia… One of the most beautiful dahlias that a gardener can feel rewarded with, bloom after bloom!

With its whimsical style and bright bicolor palette, the enchanting 5-5½" blooms of Polka put the fun back in borders and bouquets. This anemone powder-puff type dahlia features fluffy yellow centers surrounded by creamy petals washed and edged in pretty, soft cream.

This was actually one of the first varieties I started growing years ago. The beauty of this dahlia caught my eye and I just planted a bulb in a terracota pot, without knowing what kind of flower it was or how beautiful and elegant it was going to bloom for me! I fell in love immediately when I saw the first blooms! That’s the reason why I decided to include it in several of my handmade cards collections: Dancing with Dahlias, Paradise Collection, and I love you everyday Collection!

If you decide to give it a try, and plant its tubers this year, you will surely feel rewarded when they bloom! I know you might be wondering How was RustikCards born?

Well, we all know how shocking it was for all of us at the beginning of Spring last year, when we heard for the first time the word: “LOCKDOWN”. Yes! “Your county it’s under lockdown”. As weeks past by, I started feeling like family and friendship ties were completely cut. It was not the same that it was before! I couldn’t see my family and give them a hug, I couldn’t see my friends and talk to them in person. And worst yet, I worried so much when I heard how all this situation was affecting many of them emotionally. So I wondered: How Can I transmit positivism and tell them that everything is just going to be fine? How to encourage them? and how to make them feel that I am here for them? I just didn’t want to send a text to let them know. I wanted to create something Special, to make them feel Special!

I looked through the window and I saw my garden....That was it! I wanted to send flowers to everybody and tell them how much we miss them, and how much we loved them. But that was going to be a little complicated under the circumstances. That’s when I took my camera, and started taking pictures of all the flowers from my garden. I sent them to get printed, and I bought all materials to make pretty cards made out recycled paper, and rustic touch.

The following days, Miguel and I spent many hours handmaking more than 150 cards to be sent by mail, with a well thought, and encouraging message. On the outside of the envelope we wrote the expression: “A flower from our garden for You”. This was our special way to “Show them love and give them encouragement”, when they needed it the most!
Through Summer, I kept thinking: How can I encourage others to do the same? How to help others spread more love and give encouragement? So It became my mission goal! ....And RustikCards was born, An old fashioned source of encouragement through handmade cards.

I really hope this story inspires you to do the same....To show love and give encouragement to others, whenever they need it the most!!
