The final preview for is ready: Obake Corsages! 🏵️🌒

These very limited corsages are handmade from start to finish, using salvaged kimono silk and traditional stained glass making methods. The orange silk came from an antique furisode that was recycled for other projects, and the black corsages were made from silk purchased from a contemporary kimono maker in Kyoto.

Although these are something I will likely make again, this batch is extremely limited for this year’s Yokai-themed convention!

In the West, we celebrate our “spooky” season in the fall with ghost stories, campfires, pumpkin treats, and all things Halloween. In Japan, spooky season is celebrated in the summer, with stagnant warm weather and moonlight setting the scene for the most unsettling stories of ghosts, shapeshifters, and all manners of Yokai & demon folklore woven into traditional culture.

Featuring ghostly higanbana, crimson dahlias, warm colors, and the iconic stained glass and silver Néant coffin charm, these are sure conjure feelings of something otherworldly walking alongside you through a hot Summer night.

Are you going to be in the Bay Area the weekend of the 23rd? Come to and attend my Stained Glass 101 workshop! 🎏

We’ll be going over the basics of stained glass from start to finish and you’ll go home with the knowledge (and pattern!) to make your own koi fish like this.

Not into making it yourself? No worries! You can bid on this piece for the Make-A-Wish Foundation charity auction hosted by the convention!

I have one more special preview Fanime to make before the convention… can you guess what it might be? 👀👀👀

ESPAÑAAAAA it's official; I'm returning to the beloved EU this November!

Néant will be vending at the Théâtre des Vampires event at the Palace Hotel in Madrid, Spain on November 14th! I hope to see all my EU friends there and am so excited to experience another amazing event like this in a new country.

Get dressed up and come see me. You know what the vampires say, "Eat tapas with me and live forever."

Or something like that...

Japanese collection theme #3: 蝶 (butterfly)

Butterflies are the final theme reveal for today!

Although the butterflies pictured are not native to Japan, there are very similar varieties in Japan to those I used, including the 深山小灰蝶 (miyamashijimi) that shines a pale, pearlescent blue.

Butterflies symbolize transformation in Japan and are a common motif featured on the beautiful furisode kimono worn by young women. They are a symbol of youth transitioning to adulthood and femininity, but they also have a more solemn connection as they are believed to be the souls of the living travelling to the afterlife after one has passed away. When a butterfly visits one’s home, it is treated with care as it is believed to be a departed soul coming to visit the living.

From youth to adulthood to the afterlife, butterflies encompass the theme of transition and transformation.

Did you catch that there’s a tie amongst the three themes showcased today? 物の哀れ (mono no aware) is the uniting philosophy behind the Japanese collection made for this year. This is the idea that all things are fleeting, life is impermanent, so beauty must be appreciated when it presents itself in all things.

Japanese collection theme #2: 紅葉 (momiji/maple leaf)

One of the most iconic symbols in Japan, momiji represent autumn and another fleeting, short-lived transition of the seasons.

紅葉狩り (momijigari), or “hunting of red leaves”, is a tradition that dates back centuries to the Heian period. Court nobles would gather to write poetry and create art inspired by the scarlet red leaves. This symbol is commonly found on autumn and winter kimono, and the bright, fiery warm tones of the leaves create a striking contrast against mature black and gray silks.

Leaves are more difficult to work with than flowers in my jewelry because they are more fragile and are prone to crumbling. Flowers tend to have some flexibility, but dried leaves are very rigid, thus making their debut in Néant pieces an even more special occasion, as they hold a personal representation of the transition of my skills and understanding of the natural materials I use.

Japanese collection theme #1: 桜 (sakura/cherry blossom)

The first theme for today’s reveal is probably the most popular Japanese floral: the sakura cherry blossom!

I’ve made several pieces with sakura over the years, and they are consistently coveted and adored by Néant fans. Although the time for sakura has already passed for this year, this fleeting flower of Spring symbolizes new beginnings and the transience of life to mortality.

Blooming only within a short window right at the Spring equinox, these flowers start as pure snowy white and deepen in color to the soft pink they are most associated with. Encapsulating dried Sakura flowers in a glass coffin feels counterintuitive to what they symbolize, but even if the flower is beyond its time to thrive in nature, its striking beauty can be captured and adored for years.

Countering the slightly darker secondary symbolism behind this soft flower, the pastel colors showcase the sweeter side of what it represents and can be wonderfully paired with pastel kimono for hanami.
