Pinkwashing: Israel’s Use of LGBTQ+ Rights to Mask Oppression
Pinkwashing refers to using LGBTQ+ rights to distract from harmful practices. Israel employs this tactic to divert attention from its oppression of Palestinians. Rooted in homophobic and Orientalist ideas, pinkwashing frames the East as backward compared to the West, ignoring historical acceptance of same-sex relationships in the Middle East.
Modern Middle Eastern states adopted heterosexual norms to counter European criticisms, erasing their history of same-sex acceptance. This narrative of Islamic sexual repression is modern and linked to nation-building, justifying the dehumanization of Muslims.
Zionist founders countered antisemitic depictions by linking masculinity to military service, a practice now used against Palestinians. Homonationalism, coined by Jasbir K. Puar, describes how LGBTQ+ groups align with nationalist agendas, supporting imperialism and Islamophobia. This alignment frames Western nations as human rights champions and non-Western, especially Muslim, countries as adversaries. This logic supports imperialist aims and excludes racialized q***r individuals.
